Friday’s Playoff Highlights : Olson Helps Los Altos Beat South Hills, 14-6

Quarterback David Olson threw two touchdown passes to help lead Los Altos High School of Hacienda Heights to a 14-6 victory over South Hills of West Covina in a Southern Section Eastern Conference semifinal game played in front of a crowd of 3,500 Friday night at Citrus College.

The Conquerors (12-1), the defending conference champions, advanced to a conference final for the seventh time in 15 years. Los Altos has won its six championship games.

Olson, who completed 6 of 12 passes for 106 yards, threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Blake Hayward in the second quarter and a 30-yard scoring pass to Jason Martin in the third quarter. Martin made a leaping catch and broke several tackle en route to the end zone.

Larry Verdugo helped Los Altos control the ball by rushing for 123 yards in 17 carries. Los Altos held South Hills running back Jerry Wolak to 50 yards in 15 carries. The Huskies finished 10-3.

Rain forced postponement of four games Friday night. Both Southern Section Central Conference semifinal games--Santa Ana Saddleback vs. Anaheim at Glover Stadium and Garden Grove Pacifica vs. Placentia Valencia at Bolsa Grande High--were rescheduled for tonight at the same locations. The City 3-A quarterfinal game between Palisades and Locke, and the City 2-A game between Eagle Rock and Westchester will be played Monday.

SOUTHERN SECTION Big Five Conference Fountain Valley 31, Long Beach Wilson 6--Quarterback David Henigan completed 9 of 17 passes for 184 yards and 1 touchdown to lead the Barons (9-4) to the semifinal victory at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. Fountain Valley, which lost its first four games and has won nine straight, scored three touchdowns in the first 21 minutes and were never challenged. Courtney Dubar, who rushed for 67 yards in 17 carries, scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half on short runs. The Bruins (7-5) scored their only touchdown on Patrick Scott’s 30-yard run late in the second quarter. Scott rushed for 100 yards in 12 carries.

Southern Conference Los Alamitos 7, Mission Viejo 6 (OT)--The Griffins (12-1) advanced to a conference final for the first time in 10 years by upsetting the Diablos (11-2) in a California tiebreaker at Orange Coast College. After a scoreless four quarters, Los Alamitos scored on the first tiebreaker possession on a one-yard run by Marcus Garcia on fourth down. Eric Lange’s extra point made it 7-0. Mission Viejo scored on the next play on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Troy Copp to Eric Ekdahl, but Ekdahl’s extra-point attempt was no good, giving Los Alamitos the victory. Mission Viejo had a chance to win in regulation when Sean Foster recovered a Garcia fumble at the Los Alamitos 29 with about six minutes left. The Diablos drove to the Griffin five-yard line, where the drive stalled. Ekdahl was called on to try a 22-yard field goal, but the kick was blocked by Los Alamitos’ Tim Wynn.

Eastern Conference Northview 21, Montebello 7--Mike Galindo scored twice on two-yard runs as the Vikings (11-1-1) upset the Oilers (12-1) in front of 4,500 at Montebello. Galindo rushed for 45 yards in 14 carries. Northview took advantage of eight Montebello fumbles.

Northwestern Conference Arroyo Grande 15, Hart 14--The Eagles (9-2-1) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns within two minutes to upset the top-seeded Indians (11-2) in a semifinal game at College of the Canyons. With Arroyo Grande trailing, 14-3, and 8:46 left, Alfonso Daniels scored on an 87-yard reverse. The extra-point try failed. After Hart punted, the Eagles came right back to score again. On third down and seven at the Hart 48, Jamie Martin threw a touchdown pass to Matt Drake. On its final possession, the Indians drove to the Arroyo Grande eight. From there, running back Craig Whitten was stopped twice for no gain. Darren Renfro then threw an incomplete pass before John Bauccio tried a 28-yard field goal with 1:45 left that was short. Hart dominated the first half, outgaining the Eagles, 137 yards to 40, en route to a 14-0 lead.

Southeastern Conference Arroyo 7, Victor Valley 3--Quarterback Willie Reyna threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Javier Holguin in the third quarter to give the Knights (10-3) the semifinal victory at Arroyo. Reyna completed 13 of 26 passes for 186 yards.

CITY Cleveland 17, Banning 14--Jamie Grossman threw a one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Chaka Milby on a fourth-down play with 48 seconds remaining to give the Cavaliers (5-5) the upset victory over the Pilots (6-4) in a 4-A quarterfinal game at Harbor College.

Roosevelt 21, University 0--Quarterback Oscar Tavera passed for one touchdown and rushed for another to lead the Roughriders (7-1-1) to the 2-A quarterfinal victory before 2,000 at Roosevelt. Tavera rushed for 80 yards in 9 carries, including a 1-yard scoring run. Jimmy Avallos rushed for 85 yards in 14 carries, including a 2-yard scoring run. Tony Moreno caught Tavera’s only completion, a 45-yard touchdown pass in the final quarter. University finished 7-3.

Huntington Park 7, Lincoln 3--Ralph Duarte threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Joel Gutierrez late in the third quarter to lead the Spartans (6-2-1) to the 2-A quarterfinal victory at Garfield High. With just more than two minutes remaining, Huntington Park linebacker Tony Wood intercepted a Lincoln pass at the Spartan five-yard line to stop a long Tiger drive. Lincoln finished 6-3.
