Runners From Vista, Northridge Win Western Regional Cross-Country Titles
Kira Jorgensen of Vista and Ian Alsen of Northridge won the individual titles Saturday in the Kinney Western Regional cross-country championship for high school runners.
Jorgensen traded leads with Deena Drossin of Agoura Hills until she went ahead for good at the 2 1/2-mile mark.
“I had a stitch in my side at two miles and I just tried to gut it out,” Jorgensen said. “It was my toughest race of the year.”
Alsen scored a 10-yard victory over Chip Smith of Albuquerque, N.M.
The top eight finishers in the boys’ and girls’ 5,000-meter races on the Woodward Park course advanced to the Kinney national meet next Saturday in San Diego.
