Times’ All-South Coast Team : Grid Stars Shine in Both Offense, Defense

Times Staff Writer

To be a high school football star today, you must play offense and defense, if The Times’ All-South Coast team is any indication. Most of the players on the team rarely came off the field.

Players from Poly, Wilson and Millikan of the Moore League and Dominguez and Cerritos of the San Gabriel Valley League dominate this year’s All-South Coast team. All of those teams except Millikan made the CIF playoffs.

Poly and Cerritos each led the all-star team with four representatives. The team was selected by sports writers based on a poll of coaches and discussions with scouts. First-team players from 12 Times circulation areas will be honored with a breakfast and awards ceremony at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Anaheim Hilton, 777 Convention Way. The featured speaker will be Coach Larry Smith of USC.

The 1987 All-South Coast team:

OFFENSE

Dan O’Shea, quarterback, St. Anthony--Operating out of a balanced offense, he passed for 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns in the regular season and broke every school passing record. He threw for five TDs in the opening game of playoffs.

Darrell Thompson, running back, Cerritos--A fast, strong runner with great balance, Thompson gained more than 1,000 yards and also had more than 25 pass catches. One of the top high school hurdlers in California. Good enough to catch the attention of the University of Nebraska.

Patrick Scott, running back, Wilson--Scott, a junior, was the leading runner on the Bruins’ surprising playoff team. His all-purpose yardage was well above 1,000 and he averaged more than eight yards a rush.

Anthony Jones, wide receiver, Lakewood--Caught more than 30 passes to help the Lancers make the playoffs. He also played safety and, occasionally, running back, where he averaged five yards a carry. He got a lot of attention from coaches in the balloting. A good student.

Tony McCullouch, wide receiver, Poly--Son of former NFL player Earl McCullouch, this senior used his speed and good moves to make more than 30 catches for the Jackrabbits.

Derrick Thomas, tight end, Dominguez--He was the leading receiver on the San Gabriel Valley League champion Dons with six TDs and more than 600 yards. As a defensive end, he had nine quarterback sacks. He also excels in the classroom.

Tim Hall, tackle, Centennial--An excellent blocker, Hall was scouted by Washington State, Oregon State, Utah State, Fresno State and Notre Dame. He was a star on defense, too, with 97 tackles and three fumble recoveries.

Mike Loyola, tackle, Poly--His hitting really impressed opposing coaches. A two-year starter, this 250-pound junior also played guard.

Bob Pierce, guard, Wilson--A three-year starter, Pierce was called the best offensive guard in the Moore League by Wilson Coach Al Taylor. He played both ways. “Pulling” to lead runners was his specialty.

Jeff Duke, guard, Cerritos--Footwork, balance and power made Duke a tremendous blocker. The 245-pound senior was also a huge factor for the Dons on defense.

Eric Carter, center, Centennial--A highly scouted player, Carter, a B-plus student, never had a bad snap on punts or the shotgun offense. As a linebacker, he was in on 93 tackles.

D. J. Barker, kicker, Cerritos--A junior, Baker gave the Dons an extra offensive weapon. He had five medium range field goals.

DEFENSE

Bob Crane, lineman, Millikan--Crane made the All-South Coast team last year as an all-purpose player. He is on it this season as a defensive end, but he did just about everything for the Rams. As a quarterback, he passed for eight touchdowns. He also punted and kicked off and had eight extra points and a 47-yard field goal.

Marcellous Elder, lineman, Poly--He is 6 feet 5, 275 pounds, quick and only a junior. Scouts are already watching him.

Tony Cantania, lineman, St. Anthony--At 260 pounds, he plugged the middle. He plays great, no matter how beat up he gets, said his coach, Michael Reisbig.

Michael Franklin, lineman, Cerritos--Despite being double- and triple-teamed, the quick and very strong Franklin was in on 70 tackles and had seven sacks.

Murphy Duckett, linebacker, Wilson--He was the Bruins’ leading tackler and also played running back and receiver. He averaged 9.9 yards as a ball carrier and had a 66-yard run.

Marvin Hunt, linebacker, Dominguez--This hard-hitting 170-pound senior made the All-South Coast team for the second straight year and repeated as the Dons’ leading tackler. He is also a good student.

Pat Smith, linebacker, Millikan--Another All-South Coast repeater, Smith, who also played offensive guard, was the guts of the Rams. Strong in the weight room and the classroom, where his grade-point average is 3.6.

Henry Worcestor, linebacker, Millikan--While Smith was the guts of the Rams, Worcestor was the heart and soul. He led his team in unassisted tackles and scored 30 points and averaged five yards a carry as a running back.

Eric Barnes, back, Dominguez--A three-year starter, Barnes sparked the league champion Dons with five interceptions and many key tackles. He also scored eight TDs as a running back.

Donald Levingston, back, St. Anthony. An all-purpose sensation, Levingston played safety, cornerback, tailback, fullback and wide receiver. He accounted for more than 1,500 yards and scored 14 TDs. Every time he touched the ball, it meant 14.1 yards for the Saints.

Marquez Pope, back, Poly--Pope caught the eye of big-time recruiters by making seven interceptions, four fumble recoveries, 22 unassisted tackles and 32 assists. A smart player and hard hitter, he played free safety and called the defensive signals.
