Senior tailback Michael Beauregard rushed for 333 yards and 4 touchdowns in 25 carries to help the Cajon High School Cowboys of San Bernardino defeat the Arroyo High Knights of El Monte, 44-6, Friday night before 4,500 fans at Cajon in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Beauregard finished the season with 2,218 yards.

The victory over the defending conference champion Knights gave Cajon (13-1) its first championship.

Cajon finished with 467 yards, and all but 5 came on the ground.

Arroyo, which ended its season 10-4, was limited to 189 yards.

The Cowboys took the lead on their first possession, driving 42 yards for a touchdown that came on a one-yard run by fullback Corey Thurston with 7:16 remaining in the first quarter.

Arroyo appeared to regain momentum when the Knights drove 80 yards for a touchdown on their next possession. Tailback Jason MacLellan ran the final six yards for the score, but Cajon stayed on top, 7-6, when MacLellan was stopped on a two-point conversion attempt.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Knights recovered an on-side attempt and drove deep into Cajon territory. However, Cajon stopped MacLellan at the Cowboy three-yard line on fourth down to end the threat.

That was the last time Arroyo was within striking distance of the Cowboys.

Cajon increased its lead to 14-6 on a brilliant 89-yard touchdown run by Beauregard with 10:19 remaining in the first half.

The Cowboys, scoring on every possession in the first half, increased their advantage to 20-6 on a 42-yard reverse for a touchdown by wingback Ray Washington and added their final points of the half on an 18-yard field goal by Garret Skipper with one second remaining for a 23-6 lead.

Arroyo, which allowed only six points in its first three playoff games, was its own worst enemy in the second half with four fumbles.

Beauregard and the Cowboys took advantage of the mistakes by rushing for three touchdowns in the final quarter. He rolled off his longest run of the night for a 96-yard touchdown with 11:09 remaining in the quarter and added scores of 21 and 10 yards.

Arroyo, which had difficulty moving the ball on the ground against a big Cajon defensive front, was led by MacLellan with 54 yards in 11 carries.

Arroyo quarterback Willie Reyna, who had passed for 183 yards in his team’s semifinal win over Victor Valley, was limited to 3 of 8 for 12 yards.
