Community College Roundup : Cypress Beats Golden West
Jeff Green scored 23 points to lead Cypress College to a 94-81 victory over Golden West in one semifinal of the Golden West men’s basketball tournament Friday at Golden West.
Green was 10 of 15 from the field, including 2 of 2 on three-point shots. Karl Becker was 3 of 3 on three-point shots and scored 16 points for Cypress (10-1).
Kris Brodowski added 14 for Cypress, which plays Cerritos in the final tonight at 8. Cerritos defeated Compton, 70-69, in the other semifinal Friday.
Elbert Davis and Markus Muller-Stach scored 17 points each for Golden West (6-3), which plays Compton at 6 p.m. in the third-place game.
In the Santa Barbara tournament:
Saddleback 46, Santa Barbara 29--Rene Ingram and Joe Hudson scored 12 points each for Saddleback in a second-round game. Saddleback’s Vincent Smalls scored four points but had a team-high nine rebounds.
Santa Barbara (1-9) was 3 of 19 (16%) from the field in the first half and 11 of 41 (27%) for the game.
Saddleback was 19 of 42 (45%) from the field.
In a nonconference game:
Fullerton 63, Chaffey 50--Troy Joseph scored a game-high 19 points to lead Fullerton (7-3) at home. Darrin Queen and Kevin Patrick added 10 each for Fullerton, which led at halftime, 34-29.
In a women’s nonconference game:
Golden West 70, Orange Coast 69--Kathy Worthy scored on a rebound of her own missed shot with 30 seconds remaining to give the Rustlers a victory at Orange Coast.
The Pirates (4-6) had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but Nina Hansen made only one of two free throws.
Jeannine Battaglia and Jane Utu each scored 18 points for the Rustlers (8-1). Worthy had 13 points and had a team-high 9 rebounds.
Gilly Powell led the Pirates with 16 points.
