Evans Named 5-A’s Most Valuable Player in Volleyball

Jenny Evans, a senior outside hitter at Newport Harbor High School, has been selected the 5-A’s most valuable player by the Southern Section volleyball advisory committee.

Evans led Newport Harbor to the Sea View League and 5-A championships, and helped the Sailors reach the state final, which they lost to Irvine.

Also named to the 5-A first team:

Anastasia Arnold (Newport Harbor), Sienna Curci (Newport Harbor), Tamami Murakami (Woodbridge), Rhonda Schnitger (Corona del Mar), Karen Smith (Mater Dei) and Laurie Wooten (Corona del Mar).

Included on the second team:

Chickie Moiso (Corona del Mar), Mia Richley (Mater Dei), Laurie Sawin (Corona del Mar), Becky Sherwood (Newport Harbor) and Nicole Smith (Mater Dei).

Irvine’s Bev Oden, a junior middle blocker, was named the 4-A’s most valuable player.

Oden, the South Coast League most valuable player, helped Irvine win the 4-A and state Division I championships.

Also named to the 4-A first team:

Dawn Charrion (Marina), Cari Delson (Irvine), Laurie Jones (Huntington Beach) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro).

Included on the second team:

Heidi Anderson (Esperanza), Nikki Appleman (El Toro), Jennifer Gratteau (Marina), Sharon Kasser (Huntington Beach), Beth Kinney (Esperanza) and Jeannine Thomas (Edison).

Troy’s Cindy Rhone, the Freeway League’s most valuable player, and La Habra’s Robin Seabrook were named to the 3-A first team.

Marissa Hatchett of Sunny Hills was named to the second team.

In 1-A, Rosary’s Stephanie Scofield was named to the first team. Jeanne Asper (Connelly) and Debbie Waller (Whittier Christian) were named to the second team.

In the small school division, Newport Christian placed Jennifer Baker on the first team and Danielle Everett on the second team.
