High School Basketball : Burbank Wins on Fairman’s Shot, 56-51

Dan Fairman’s three-point play with 58 seconds left led Burbank to a 56-51 nonleague victory at Ontario on Wednesday.

Fairman, who scored eight points, broke a 49-49 tie with a basket and free throw.

Burbank had led, 16-4, at the end of the first quarter and 44-35 at the end of three quarters, but Ontario rallied in the final period.

Mike Nielsen scored a team-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting for Burbank (5-2). Teammate Mike Nash added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Calvin Ford led Ontario (1-5) with a game-high 25 points, including 4 of 4 from three-point range.

Kennedy 72, Jefferson 61--Clarence Williams, an All-Valley League senior forward, scored 23 points to lead Kennedy in a first-round game at the Hamilton tournament.

Uba Satterfield and Eugene Miller added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Kennedy, which is ranked No. 4 in The Times Valley Poll.

Satterfield also had eight rebounds and five assists for Kennedy (4-0).

Hoover 72, Burroughs 69--Eddie Hill of Burroughs scored a game-high 26 points but host Hoover’s balanced scoring was too much for the Indians in the nonleague game.

Vigen Serop scored 15 points, Joe Velazques added 11, and John Hillman and Joe Ferguson each scored 10 for Hoover.

Dan Murphy added 18 points for Burroughs (4-5).

Montclair Prep 77, Ontario Christian 48--Craig Handschu scored 26 points and teammate David Sanger added 22 in the third-place game of the Flintridge Prep tournament.

Handschu, a 6-2 senior forward, scored 16 points in the decisive third quarter when the Mounties blitzed Ontario Christian, 26-9. Handschu, who made 11 of 16 shots, also had 10 rebounds and 6 assists.

Sanger added 10 rebounds.

Duane Johnson had 15 points and six assists for Montclair Prep (6-2). Ontario Christian is 3-4.

West Valley Christian 72, Newbridge 46--Freshman Ruben Oronoz had his second consecutive triple-double to lead the host Seekers to a Westside League victory.

Oronoz, a 6-3 forward, had 14 points, 19 rebounds and 11 assists. Teammates Bobby Gaskill (23 points, 16 rebounds) and John Stalboerger (20 points, 10 rebounds) also had impressive games as West Valley Christian improved to 6-0 overall, 3-0 in league play.

GIRLS

Holy Martyrs 55, Ramona 48 (OT)--Ayline Amirayan scored all seven of Holy Martyrs’ overtime points to lead the Armens in a second-round Marlborough tournament game.

Amirayan sank a three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation and finished with a game-high 29 points.

Teammate Dalia Gezenian added 24 points and 15 rebounds for Holy Martyrs (6-1).
