THE PREPS : Basketball Roundup : Newport Harbor Wins in San Dieguito Tournament

Tyler Koon scored a game-high 17 points and added 11 rebounds to lead Newport Harbor High School to a 60-43 victory over San Clemente for a second-round consolation victory in the San Dieguito Tournament at San Dieguito High School.

San Clemente, led by Mike Peters with 16 points, had a 16-13 lead after one quarter and trailed by only two at the half, but Newport Harbor took control with a 16-8 third quarter.

Senior guard Mike Hardin scored 14 points and Scott Gray added 11 rebounds for Newport Harbor (6-2), which plays San Dieguito in the consolation semifinals Monday.

In the Mid-Pacific tournament:

La Quinta 77, Mid-Pacific Institute 52--Arri Buford scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Aztecs (6-2) in a quarterfinal game late Friday night at Honolulu. Scott Campbell (13 points, 6 rebounds) and Kenny Bennett (5 points, 6 assists) helped La Quinta.

In girls’ games:

In the Savanna tournament:

El Toro 80, Marina 56--Kristen Bevis scored 27 points and Elaine Youngs scored 12 before injuring her ankle in the second quarter as El Toro (10-0) won the tournament championship. Youngs is not expected to play for a few days.

Edison 38, Tustin 31--Wendy Sandsted scored 17 points, including 10 in the third quarter, and Krisden Tanabe added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Chargers (8-2).

Los Alamitos 77, Buena Park 32-- Jennifer Ensley, a 6-foot 2-inch senior center, scored 31 points to lead Los Alamnitos in the seventh-place consolation game.

In the El Dorado tournament:

Canyon 63, Palm Desert 24--Kari Erkenbrack and Lisa Ino scored 16 points each to lead the Comanches at El Dorado in the third-place game.

El Dorado 40, Whittier Christian 36--Chrissy Nieman scored 15 points to lead the Golden Hawks in the consolation championship.

In the Garden Grove Tournament

Capistrano Valley 59, Rowland 39--Heather Schoeny (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Holly Anderson (18 points, 18 rebounds) were named the tournament’s co-most valuable players in leading the Cougars (5-3) to the championship.

At the Tournament of Champions:

Brea-Olinda 86, St. Joseph 46--Tammy Blackburn (25 points), Susan Tousey (17) and Aimee McDaniel (16) all combined to lead the Wildcats (9-0) in a first-round game at Santa Barbara.

In the Bolsa Grande Tournament

Estancia 48, Laguna Hills 19--Shawna Newbern scored 11 points to lead the Eagles in a first-round game.

Newport Harbor 2, Sunny Hills 0--Newport Harbor won by forfiet, as Sunny Hills failed to make the game because it played at another tournament.

Rancho Alamitos 65, Anaheim 31--Kim Scharpenberg scored 13 points and Christy Kaluhenn added 12 to lead Rancho Alamitos.

Bolsa Grande 46, Santa Ana 39--Liz Flores scored 20 points and Jennifer Tracy added 14 and 12 rebounds to help the Madadores (4-2).

In the Orange Lutheran Tournament:

Rosary 44, Orange Lutheran 39--Cari Garcia scored 21 points to lead Rosary, and Kim Klatt scored 11 to lead the Lancers (4-3).
