San Diego High School Basketball : El Camino Holds Off Escondido, 79-74

El Camino fought off a late surge to beat Escondido, 79-74, Saturday night in the second round of the Lt. Mitchell basketball tournament at San Dieguito High School.

Escondido trailed, 78-70, in the final 30 seconds but scored twice on steals to cut El Camino’s lead to 78-74. Escondido’s Mason Stevenson had two more steals in the final 11 seconds but missed layups after each.

Scott Oatsvall scored 24 points and Lee Cobb added 22 for El Camino (5-0). Paul Baldwin scored 26 for Escondido.

In other Lt. Mitchell tournament games:

Torrey Pines 75, El Centro 52--Kevin Flanagan had 22 points and 16 rebounds and Courtie Miller added 22 points for host Torrey Pines. The Falcons (9-0) led by eight points after the third period, then pulled away with a 26-11 burst as Flanagan scored 10. Ralph Bellamy led El Centro (5-2) with 13 points.

Oceanside 62, San Pasqual 46--Alvin McGee and Donald Barner each scored 17 points for Oceanside at Torrey Pines. Eric Meek led San Pasqual (4-3) with 19 points.

Vista 63, Orange Glen 57--Art Simantal scored 20 points, including four three-pointers, to lead Vista. Orange Glen led, 21-13, after the first period, but Vista (6-3) took control in the second half. Herbie Weston added 19 points for Vista. Dan Early and Cree Morris each scored 13 for Orange Glen (4-6).

San Dieguito 71, San Marcos 48--Jeff Zevely scored 24 points, including 12 in the first period, and Jack Minger added 16 for San Dieguito (5-4). San Dieguito took control in the second quarter, outscoring San Marcos, 29-9. Matt Barrick led San Marcos (0-4) with 12 points.

Las Vegas 98, Glendale Hoover 81--Eric White scored 33 points and Marlon Brandon added 18 to lead Las Vegas (6-1). Joe Velasquez and Vigen Serop each scored 20 for Hoover (4-4).

Newport Harbor 60, San Clemente 43--Tyler Moon scored 17 points, and Mike Harden added 14 for Newport Harbor (6-2), which was 19 for 22 from the line. Mike Peters led San Clemente (1-7) with 16 points.
