THE PREPS : Basketball Roundup : Foothill Wins, Gains Carson City Semifinals

Rusty Van Cleave scored 18 points, all on three-point shots, to lead Foothill High School to a 67-49 victory over Wooster Monday night in the Carson City Tournament at Carson City High School.

The Knights (5-1) increased a six-point halftime lead to a 10-point advantage at the start of the third quarter. They then slowly pulled away, outscoring Wooster, 23-13, in the final quarter.

Greg Ribber had 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Knights, who shot 52% for the game. Bill Peckham scored 12 points and Dan Abel 10.

Foothill will play Carson City in a semifinal game tonight at 8.

In the San Dieguito Tournament:

Newport Harbor 49, San Dieguito 43--Jim Geerlings scored 14 points, including a clutch three-pointer, to lead the Sailors (7-2) in the consolation semifinals at San Dieguito High School. With the score tied, 39-39, Geerlings hit a three-point jumper to give the Sailors (7-2) the lead for good. Newport Harbor outscored San Dieguito, 15-6 in the final quarter. Tyler Koon had 12 points for Newport Harbor. The Sailors play Las Vegas tonight at 6 for the consolation championship.

In the San Diego Kiwanis Tournament:

Loara 53, Fallbrook 50--Ted Buchanan had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Saxons (3-3) in a first round game at San Diego High School. Paul Plettinck scored 10 points for Loara, which won its third consecutive game. Mike West led Fallbrook with 23 points. The Saxons will play Lincoln tonight at 8:15 in the second round.

In the Bolsa Grande Tournament:

Rancho Alamitos 53, Bolsa Grande 51--Christy Calhoun made a steal with 15 seconds remaining to preserve the semifinal victory for the Vaqueros. Frances Barba scored 18 points for Rancho Alamitos. Liz Flores had 22 points for the Matadors. The Vaqueros will play Estancia in the final tonight at 7:30.

Estancia 49, Newport Harbor 38--Shawana Newbern scored 18 points and Tracey Hoffman 10 to lead the Eagles. Shantel had 13 points for the Sailors. Newport Harbor faces Bolsa Grande in the third place game today at 4:30.

In the consolation bracket:

Sunny Hills 33, Laguna Hills 27--Kim Moulton scored 16 points for the Lancers. Sunny Hills will play Santa Ana in the consolation final at 6 tonight.

Santa Ana 59, Anaheim 42--Mona Martinez scored 22 points to lead the Saints (2-3) in the consolation semifinals. Gracie Lopez had 14 points and Trine Bruce 10 for Santa Ana. Lopez also had 10 rebounds. Ursla Rauch scored 19 points for the Colonists.

In the Tournament of Champions:

Brea-Olinda 73, Louisville Dawson 48--Amy McDaniel scored 24 points and Susan Tousey 23 to lead the Wildcats (10-0) to victory in the quarterfinals at Santa Barbara High School.
