Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Ocean View Tops Long Beach Poly by 40

Greg Evans scored 20 points and Todd Norman 13 to lead Ocean View High School to an 80-40 victory over Long Beach Poly Tuesday in a boys’ nonleague basketball game at Long Beach.

Ocean View shot 54% (39 of 72), and Poly shot just 25% (18 of 72). Ocean View also was 16 of 24 from the free-throw line.

Craig Rice added 11 points and Tim Pelonis had a team-high 6 rebounds for Ocean View (7-6). Ocean View took a 21-17 lead and improved it to 43-23 at the half.

In other nonleague play:

Estancia 56, Costa Mesa 40--Mike Curtis and Chris Rupsa scored 16 points each for Estancia (11-5) at home. Costa Mesa (3-9) took a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes, but Estancia rallied for a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Loara 38, Savanna 37--Ted Buchanan made two free throws with six seconds left for the Saxons at Loara. Savanna then missed on a three-point shot with one second left. Buchanan led all scorers with 16 points. Loara is 4-7, Savanna 8-4.

Mission Viejo 59, Long Beach Wilson 47--Tom Tkach scored 17 points, and Jeff Springfield had 16 and 12 rebounds for Mission Viejo. Mission Viejo (7-6) was 20 of 25 from the free-throw line. It led, 28-16, at the half, but Wilson was able to narrow the lead to 34-31 after three quarters.

Trabuco Hills 76, Esperanza 71--Center Rick Swanwick scored 10 of his 18 points in the third quarter as the Mustangs (9-4) overcame a 41-35 halftime deficit. Ted Colburn of Trabuco Hills led all scorers with 26 points, including four three-point shots. Esperanza is 8-6.

Tustin 65, Villa Park 43--Leo Parker scored 26 points for the Tillers at Villa Park. Brad Cantrell added 12 for Tustin (10-3). Roger Branstine led Villa Park (1-10) with 15 points.

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 73, Capistrano Valley Christian 51--Senior center Erik Martin scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds and 5 blocked shots for Whittier Christian in the league opener at Capistrano Valley Christian, which had 11 points from Kirk Riddle. Both teams are 5-4.
