STATWATCH : Chatsworth Finds Some Consolation

Share

Everyone wanted to get into the act for Chatsworth last Wednesday in the third-place game of the Chaminade tournament’s consolation bracket. After a low-scoring loss to Serra, 51-46, the Chancellors routed Santa Paula, doubling their point total from the previous day in a 92-47 victory. Coach Gary Shair cooled off the bench as each of his 10 players scored.

“We didn’t play our first stringers that much,” Shair said. “I’d just as soon spread it around. I was pleased because a lot of my kids don’t get a chance to play unless it’s a blowout.”

Chatsworth (6-5) was led by Erik Merkel with 23 points and David Waco with 19. Guard Rick Garrick, the Chancellors’ leading scorer (14.3 points a game), finished with 5 points and scored only 27 points in four games in the tournament.

Scoring: Saugus guard Rick Bilek is having more success at making shots from outside the three-point line than he is making shots from inside the line. He has made 28 three-point shots but only 22 two-pointers. Bilek, who averages 12.3 points a game, is the Centurions’ leading scorer and free-throw shooter (87%). Saugus has made 48 three-point shots as a team and is shooting 36% from three-point country. . . . North Hollywood’s Dominic Nappi, an All-City forward last season, averaged 10.3 points in his first four games this season. In his past four games, Nappi is averaging 24.5 points.

Calabasas’ Jon Drezner was the leading scorer in the Chaminade tournament, averaging 32 points a game. Drezner, a senior, scored 128 points in four games. Calabasas, however, is shooting 55.3% from the free-throw line (146 of 264). Surprisingly, the Coyotes have made 35% of their three-point shots (83 of 237). . . . Oak Park made 53 of 102 free throws in the Bell-Jeff tournament for a season-low 52%. The Eagles are shooting 58.7% (135 of 230) from the line.

Records: Including Hart’s 75-55 loss to Beverly Hills in the championship game of the Hart tournament, three of the Indians’ five losses have been recorded against teams whose combined record is 35-4. The Indians also have dropped games to Simi Valley and Ventura. . . . Three Grant players set or tied four school records during the holiday break. Senior Danny Enowitz set a single-game scoring record with his 41-point performance against Granada Hills in the North Hollywood tournament’s consolation championship. Enowitz made 16 field goals against the Highlanders, also a school record. Grant’s Adi Saker recorded 14 assists against Poly in the Birmingham tournament to break a 17-year-old record and junior forward Jamey Ekerling put together a stretch of 15 consecutive free throws to tie another mark.

Girls: Notre Dame center Andrea Banducci has begun to rewrite the Knights’ record book. Banducci, a 6-0 junior, is averaging 24.2 points and 18.3 rebounds a game. In a victory over St. Bernard earlier this season, Banducci scored 42 points to set a school single-game scoring record, shattering the old mark by 20 points.
