Girls’ Basketball : Foothill Survives a Fourth-Quarter Scare to Win, 37-36

The Foothill High School girls’ basketball team survived a fourth-quarter rally by Canyon to come away with a 37-36 Century League victory Tuesday at Canyon.

Foothill (10-8, 5-0) led, 31-21, after three quarters. But Canyon outscored Foothill, 15-6, in the fourth quarter, led by Lisa Iino’s nine points in the quarter. Iino finished with 19 points for Canyon (4-1 in league).

Tanya Foxe’s 12 points and 10 rebounds led Foothill (10-8, 5-0).

In other Century League action:

Santa Ana 50, Villa Park 43--Sharon Young scored 14 points and had 6 rebounds to lead Santa Ana (8-6, 3-2) at home. Villa Park (2-16, 0-5) was led by Stacy Shimoda’s 14 points.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 51, St. Joseph 39--Kelly O’Brien scored 14 points and had 14 rebounds to lead Mater Dei (16-5, 5-0) at St. Joseph. Dede Mosman’s 20 points led St. Joseph’s.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 56, Buena Park 49--Fullerton won at Buena Park despite having top scorer Sabrina Welch ejected from the game in the second quarter. Welch and Buena Park’s Felica Benjamin were involved in a fight that resulted in both players being removed from the game.

Welch left with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Blanca Hernandez led Fullerton with 12 points and sophomore forward Lynn Gilbert had 16 rebounds and 5 points for Fullerton (12-5, 5-1). Shannon Bodham had 15 points for Buena Park (4-2 in league).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 38, Brethren 17--Host Orange Lutheran limited Brethren to five second-half points, none in the third quarter. DeeDee Oyama’s 10 points led Orange Lutheran (8-7, 4-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 41, Trabuco Hills 33--Christy Grebel scored 22 points to lead Laguna Hills (3-11, 1-4) at home. Grebel, a 5-10 center/forward, also had 20 rebounds. Dee Dee Sampson’s 12 points led Trabuco Hills (4-13, 0-5).

Woodbridge 52, Laguna Beach 40--Kathy Millat scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Woodbridge (16-5, 4-1) at Laguna Beach. Randee Mahony added 14 points for Woodbridge. Laguna Beach is 8-6 and 2-3.

In the Sea View League:

University 67, Corona del Mar 23--Tina Cooper scored 18 and Shelley Davis had 10 points and 7 rebounds for University (8-8, 3-2) at home. Corona del Mar is 0-5 in league.

Estancia 53, Saddleback 50--Patrice Lumpkin, freshman guard, scored 19 points for the visiting Eagles (12-7, 3-2). Shawna Newbern added 16 points for Estancia. Monica Walton had 12 points for Saddleback is 3-2 in league play.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 43, San Clemente 32--Shelley Zierhut scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Capistrano Valley at home. Heather Schoeny had 12 points and Holly Anderson had 13 rebounds for Capistrano Valley (14-5, 4-1), which is ranked seventh in the Orange County Coaches’ Poll.
