The St. Louis Cardinals traded pitcher Rick Horton, rookie center fielder Lance Johnson and an undisclosed amount of cash to the Chicago White Sox for pitcher Jose DeLeon, a 27-year-old right-hander who was 11-12 last year.
The key for the White Sox, Manager Jim Fregosi said, was the acquisition of Johnson, who hit .333 at Louisville last year, and was the American Assn.’s most valuable player. Johnson will start in center field, allowing Fregosi to move Kenny Williams to third base.
