Prep Soccer : Huntington Beach Girls Upset Edison

Tara Snyder scored with 15 minutes remaining to lead Huntington Beach High School to a 1-0 upset of Edison Tuesday in a Sunset League girls’ soccer match at Edison.

It was the first time in six years that Huntington Beach (8-7-4, 4-3-2) has defeated Edison, the defending Sunset League champion. Edison (12-5-5, 5-2-2) is ranked sixth in the Southern Section 4-A.

Marianna Tiplot provided Snyder the assist with a quick cross from the right wing. Snyder, a junior forward, sprinted toward the ball from 10 yards out and kicked it past Edison goalie Nichole Turner.

Goalie Stefanie Pemper made nine saves for unranked Huntington Beach. Turner made three saves for Edison.

Edison will play second-place Fountain Valley for the league championship Thursday at Fountain Valley. Huntington Beach is tied for third with Marina.

In another Sunset League match:

Marina 0, Fountain Valley 0--Cristin Rossman had three saves for Marina (5-6-7, 2-1-6) and Kelly Gillis had seven saves for Fountain Valley.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 6, Foothill 2--Susie Barnett and Keri Randels scored two goals each for Villa Park (10-7-2, 6-2-1), which clinched the league title at home. Lisa Ererling and Jennifer Nunez also scored for Villa Park.

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 4, El Dorado 0--Jenny Reyes and Karen Kolodziej scored two goals each for host Los Alamitos (20-3-2, 7-1-1). The victory clinched second place for Los Alamitos. Dawn Marie Gludt had 9 saves for Los Alamitos and Gina Susaeta had 19 saves for El Dorado, 4-4-1 in league.

Esperanza 6, Loara 0--Maria Del Torre scored two goals and Chrissy Coppage, Lynn Murray, Linda Lunceford and Michelle Rullo each added one to lead Esperanza (18-1-2, 8-0-1), the second-ranked team in the Southern Section 3-A, at home.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 1, Tustin 1--Prentice Perkins scored the tying goal on a breakaway in the second half for Corona del Mar (12-5-3, 6-0-3) at Tustin. Laura Teal scored on a corner kick in the first half for Tustin (6-5-5, 4-2-3).

Goalie Jennifer Netherwood had eight saves for the Tillers, and Kim Kolstad had seven saves for the Sea Kings.

Corona del Mar will play University at home Thursday for the league championship at 3 p.m.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 1, San Clemente 0--Sara Stoney scored on a 25-yard direct kick midway through the second half to lead the Cougars (15-3-3, 5-1-3) at San Clemente. Goalie Pam Gladden had six saves for Capistrano Valley. San Clemente is 6-5-5, 1-4-3.

Dana Hills 1, El Toro 1--Ann Viceroy scored with 10 minutes left for Dana Hills (11-6-5, 3-4-2), and Kim Maniscalco scored with 5 minutes left for El Toro (3-4-2 in league) at Dana Hills.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Woodbridge 2, Orange 2--Nichole Raymond of Woodbridge scored the tying goal with 20 minutes remaining at Orange. Debbie Ford scored two goals for Orange. Shawn Coleman scored Woodbridge’s first goal. Alicia East made four saves for Orange (9-2-4, 3-2-3). Laya Dogmetchi made 10 saves for Woodbridge (7-8-2, 3-2-2).

In an Angelus League boys’ match:

Mater Dei 3, Bishop Amat 1--Paul Oldham scored two goals and Doug West one for visiting Mater Dei (23-1-2, 9-1). Oldham now has 27 goals this season. It was the 100th career coaching victory for Mater Dei’s Curt Bauer, who is in his fifth season.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 4, Rancho Alamitos 3--Mark Piening scored two goals in the first half to lead Kennedy at home. Kennedy (15-2-3, 12-0-1) also had goals from Mike Laliberte and sophomore Kyong Kim.

Pacifica 2, La Quinta 1--Dan Barber scored two goals to lead host Pacifica (7-5-4, 6-4-3), which moved into third place in the league. Bob Powell had nine saves for Pacifica.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 4, Buena Park 1--David Vallejo scored his 18th and 19th goals of the season and David Karaba and Ethan Saldana each scored one to lead La Habra (11-5-4, 6-2-1) at Buena Park. John Schultz scored for Buena Park.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Anaheim 2--Chris Stempson scored with 5 minutes left to lift Valencia (10-6-3, 4-0-3) into first place at Anaheim. Anaheim (8-7-3, 4-2-1) tied the score, 2-2, when a Valencia player accidentally kicked the ball into his own goal with 10 minutes left. Tim Rashford and Jeff Hudson also scored for Valencia.

Brea-Olinda 3, Western 2--Tony Catalano scored two goals and David Morrill one to lead Brea-Olinda (8-5-6, 3-2-2) at Western. The victory secures Brea-Olinda’s third-place position in the league. Eddie Anaya and Paco Jimenez each scored a goal for Western (6-9-4, 2-2-4).
