Stephanie Riley of Patrick Henry High School is known more for her rebounding than her scoring. But Friday, as time ran out against No. 1-ranked Point Loma, Riley’s 10-footer from the right side of the key gave Patrick Henry a 52-50 upset victory.

The victory, Patrick Henry’s first over Point Loma in four years, moved the Patriots into a first-place tie with Point Loma in the City Eastern League. Both teams are 6-1 in league play.

Riley, a 5-foot 10-inch sophomore who averages 10 points per game, had 10 points and 15 rebounds against Point Loma. In Patrick Henry’s win over Morse last Tuesday, Riley had 20 rebounds.

“She’s real steady around the basket,” said Patrick Henry Coach John Ferguson. “She has good hands, and she handles the ball real well for a big girl.”

Carolyn Wakefield doesn’t score many goals and thus doesn’t receive much publicity, but she’s important to her team nonetheless. Wakefield is a junior defender for San Diego High School, and she’s part of the reason the Cavers are 7-0-1 in the Central League and 12-3-1 overall.

Last week, Our Lady of Peace almost snapped San Diego’s undefeated league record, but, as Our Lady of Peace set up for a game-winning goal, Wakefield cleared the ball to preserve the 0-0 tie.

“There hasn’t been a goal scored on her side of the field (the right side) this season,” said San Diego Coach Buzz Clevenger. “There’s not a steadier player in the league. I call her my blue-collar worker--she goes out and gets the job done.”
