Boys’ Athletes of the Week : BASKETBALL

Share

Manny Silva, Valhalla High School boys’ basketball coach, calls forward Rafid Kiti “Mr. Outside.” Silva may have to change Kiti’s nickname to “Mr. Everywhere.”

In a 90-77 victory over Granite Hills Friday, Kiti scored 46 points, the most in a San Diego Section boys’ game this season.

Kiti, a 6-foot 5-inch junior, primarily handles the outside shooting for eighth-ranked Valhalla. But against Granite Hills, Kiti hit from everywhere.

Of his 20 baskets from the field, 13 were layups and two were off offensive rebounds. He also made 1 of 4 three-pointers and 5 of 7 free throws.

Kiti shot 60% from the field, making 20 of 32 shots. His previous high was 36 points against Bloomington San Bernardino.

SOCCER

Keith Milner, a Valhalla defender, scored only his second goal of the season Friday, but it was one he and his teammates will remember for a long time.

Milner came off the bench for Valhalla’s only goal in a 1-0 Grossmont League victory over Mount Miguel. The victory guaranteed Valhalla at least a tie for the league title.

Milner’s goal also helped Valhalla (17-0-1) break the record for consecutive league victories. Valhalla has not lost in its last 25 Grossmont League matches, breaking the mark held by Valhalla’s 1981-82 team and Granite Hills’ 1984-85 team.

Valhalla is the first league team to win 200 matches.

WRESTLING

Mike Grubbs, an El Camino wrestler, entered the championship match of the 109-pound class at the 14th Breakfast Optimists wrestling tournament with a 24-1 record.

Opposite Grubbs in Saturday’s final at El Camino was Shane Roselle of Poway, the only wrestler to defeat Grubbs this season. Roselle beat Grubbs at the El Cajon Christmas tournament.

Grubbs exacted a measure of revenge when he defeated Roselle, 7-6, and was named the 32-team tournament’s outstanding lightweight wrestler.
