Mission Viejo High School showed why it’s the class of the Southern Section 4-A Thursday as it shut out rival Capistrano Valley, 4-0, in a South Coast League girls’ soccer match at Capistrano Valley.

The Diablos (23-0-2, 10-0-1), the South League champions, advance to next week’s Southern Section playoffs as the section’s top-ranked team. Mission Viejo is the defending Southern Section champion.

Capistrano Valley (15-4-3, 5-2-3), ranked fifth in 4-A, will be the No. 2 South Coast League representative. Three of Capistrano Valley’s four losses this season were to Mission Viejo.

Capistrano Valley seemed a bit tentative Thursday. Mission Viejo, however, was at its best. The Diablos controlled much of the first half with impressive passing and ball control, displaying the teamwork that has kept them from losing in 65 consecutive games.

Julie Foudy, a junior midfielder and the 1987 4-A Southern Section player of the year, was the key to Mission Viejo’s effectiveness. Foudy, who threads through and around defenses with ease, got Mission Viejo going in the first half.

Ten minutes into the game, Foudy dribbled the length of the field and passed perfectly to Kerri Kennedy, who scored from 10 yards out.

Capistrano Valley came back with two drives, but both scoring attempts failed as one shot flew over the goalie box and the other was quickly stolen by a Mission Viejo defender. Other drives by Capistrano Valley were foiled by Mission Viejo’s defense, led by sweeper Rae Hubocan, fullback Sherri Bertell and goalkeeper Tamar deFries.

Mission Viejo shot three more times before Stacey Hopper drove in from 30 yards out to score and give Mission Viejo a 2-0 lead.

Fifteen minutes later, with one minute remaining in the first half, Kennedy lofted a high cross pass to Foudy, who kicked it in from eight yards out to give the Diablos a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Diablos’ fourth and final goal was scored 32 minutes into the second half, as Tammy Van Opdorp lofted a 40-yard pass from the right sideline to Kelly Hampton, who headed the ball into the net from five yards out.

Capistrano Valley goalie Pam Gladden made six saves in the game, including two on dives. DeFries made seven saves for Mission Viejo.

Dana Hills 3, San Clemente 0--Stacy Ramirez, Helen Crowe and Ann Viceroy scored goals for host Dana Hills (12-6-4, 4-4-2), whose goalie, Karla Gunderson, made four saves. Janine Davis made nine saves for San Clemente (6-7-6, 1-5-4).
