Off Road Gran Prix Is Tonight

For the third consecutive year, Mickey Thompson brings his Off Road Championship Gran Prix series to San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium tonight.

The stadium floor, which two weeks ago hosted the Super Bowl, has been transformed into a man-made dirt course, complete with jumps and other rough terrain, to simulate what racers would encounter in the desert.

The event, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will feature racing in six different classes.

RUGBY

Defending national champion San Diego State will be the favorite in the college bracket of the 17th annual Old Mission Beach Athletic Club Rugby Tournament today and tomorrow at Robb Field in Ocean Beach. OMBAC will participate in the senior division against teams from all over the world.

TENNIS

Chapman College teammates Miles Walker and Olivier Amerlinck will meet for the title in the No. 1-2 singles division today as singles finals and doubles semifinals will be played in the San Diego Intercollegiate Invitational Tennis Tournament at the USD west courts beginning at 9:30 a.m.

In the 3-4 division, Robert Soneru of U.S. International plays David Klembith of Pepperdine. Rick Matheson of the University of San Diego meets Chico Bonner of Cal State-Long Beach at 5-6.

Doubles semifinal play begins at 1 p.m.

The Anderson (S.C.) College men’s tennis team defeated Grossmont College, 6-0, in a match between the nation’s top-ranked junior college team and California’s top-ranked community college team at Anderson, S.C.

Anderson swept singles play. Doubles were canceled because a below-zero wind-chill factor.

BASEBALL

Rick Nowak struck out nine and allowed just three hits in pitching UCSD to an 8-2 Division III baseball win over Occidental College in Los Angeles.

Thad Ferre was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI for UCSD and Dub Kruse was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles.

UCSD (2-0) has now won 14 consecutive regular season games over the past two seasons, a school record.

BASKETBALL

Andy Jedynak scored a career high, 20 points to lead nine UC San Diego players in double figures in a 133-60 victory over Dominican College of San Francisco at UCSD.

The Point Loma Nazarene College women’s basketball team (17-8) defeated Pomona-Pitzer (12-9) at home, 51-36. Ann Duffy led Point Loma and all scorers with 16 points.
