Roundup : Torczon Leads Fullerton Women, 74-56

Forward Amy Torczon scored 23 points and had 8 rebounds to lead the Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball team to a 74-56 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory over San Jose State Saturday night in Titan Gym.

The victory was Coach Maryalyce Jeremiah’s 300th career victory. Jeremiah is in her third season at Fullerton after coaching at Indiana, Dayton and Cedarville College.

Fullerton’s Gena Miller had 16 points and 6 rebounds and Felicia Benson added 12 points. Guard Stacy Hunt scored 8 points, had 10 assists and a school-record 13 steals.

The Titans (14-8, 9-4) led by as many as 24 points during the game.

San Jose State (1-22, 0-14) committed 33 turnovers. The Spartans were led by Dana Jones, who scored 15 points. Teddi Johnson and LaTasha Causey each scored 13 for San Jose State.

In other PCAA women’s games:

UC Irvine 56, Pacific 47--Natalie Crawford scored 14 points to lead Irvine at Pacific. Mickey Skieresz added 13 points and 9 rebounds for Irvine, which is 7-6 in the PCAA. The Anteaters led, 30-24, at halftime. Pacific was led by center Julie Szukalski’s 22 points.

In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:

Chapman 82, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 73--Chapman outscored Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 48-27, in the second half to come from behind and win at home. Karan Polk led Chapman (4-4, 13-8) with 22 points and 7 assists. Jennifer Uecke added a season-high 21 points and 11 rebounds.

In nonconference action:

Pomona-Pitzer 75, Pacific Christian 24--Anne Backus scored 18, Liz Peters added 16 and Lynanne Vogele to lead Pomona at Fullerton. Debbie LaGrow led Pacific Christian (2-18) with eight points.

In the men’s Western Christian Athletic Assn.:

Pacific Christian 98, Southwestern 30--Steve Welch scored 23 points to lead PCC at home. Six PCC players scored in double figures, including Mike DeVires with 15. PCC ends its conference season with a 8-0 record, and is 27-4 overall. Marvin Temple’s 10 points led Southwestern. PCC led, 47-19, at halftime.

In men’s Golden State Athletic Conference action:

Southern California College 72, Christ College Irvine 62--Jeff Bickmore scored 18 points to lead SCC at Irvine. Todd Dixon added 14 for Southern California College, and John Mounce and Mike Lightfoot each had 12. Christ College Irvine’s Dan Clatt led all scorers with 25 points.
