College Roundup : Gerakos Sets Mark for Irvine

UC Irvine Coach Mike Gerakos became the school’s winningest baseball coach when the Anteaters defeated UC Riverside, 14-10, at Anteater Field Tuesday.

Gerakos, in his eighth season, has a career record of 188-195-7 at Irvine. He passes Gary Adam (187-69 from 1970 to 1974), who is coaching at UCLA.

The Anteaters (6-5-1) broke the game open by scoring seven runs in the sixth, when they sent 11 players to the plate.

Osmar DeChavez and Tracy Shanahan led Irvine with three hits and three RBIs each. Eight players had at least two hits for Irvine.

In other nonconference baseball games:

Arizona State 9, Chapman 3--Martin Peralta, Mike Burrola and Steve Willis all hit home runs in the second inning to lead the No. 2 Sun Devils (15-1) at Tempe.

David Bird, who allowed just three homers in 64 innings last season, gave up 9 hits and 6 runs (5 earned) in 4 innings to take the loss for Chapman. Paul Swingle was 3 for 4 with a double for Chapman (6-4-1).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

Chapman 7, UC Riverside 2--Miles Walker, Chapman’s No. 1 singles player, defeated Otis Allmon, 7-6, 6-1, for host Chapman (3-1, 3-0), the top-ranked Division II team in the nation. Walker is the No. 2-ranked singles player and Allmon No. 7 nationally.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Whittier 8, Christ College Irvine 1--Andy Eckert was the only winner for Christ College (0-4). Whittier is 2-4.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 9, Cal State Fullerton 0--Courtney Weichsel, Irvine’s No. 1 player, defeated Nicole Brechtbuhl to bring her singles record to 8-4. Irvine is 6-1, Fullerton 3-3.

Stacey Cadigan defeated Caroline Sporer and Karin Bering defeated Lanna Hollo to improve their records to 6-3 and 5-2 for Irvine.

In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 7, 2, Cal State Northridge 2, 2--Charis Monroe’s single scored Missy Coombs to cap a three-run seventh inning in the second game and give Fullerton (4-0) a sweep at Fullerton.
