Community College Roundup : Dorlis Sparks Cypress Women Past Riverside

Venetta Dorlis scored 18 points to lead Cypress College to a 74-67 victory over Riverside in an Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball game Friday at Riverside.

Riverside pulled within three points with three minutes left, but Cypress converted 7 of its last 8 free throws to seal the victory. Cypress was 18 of 21 from the foul line.

Cypress (23-7) ended conference play unbeaten in 10 games. Cypress clinched the conference title Tuesday with a victory over Saddleback.

Becky Wayland had 21 points for Cypress and Karen Caires added 15.

Riverside’s Adrian Drake scored 17. Jodi Sandow added 14, Carla Luke 12, Lourdes Padilla 12 and Salinda Mendoza 10. Riverside (6-4 in conference) was the defending conference champion.

In another Orange Empire Conference women’s game:

Rancho Santiago 55, Saddleback 44--Demerial Gibson scored 19 points to lead host Rancho Santiago (11-16, 5-5). Doeisa Anderson scored 16 for Saddleback (7-19, 0-10).

In a South Coast Conference game:

Golden West 82, Fullerton 73--Jeannine Battaglia scored 31 points for Golden West (29-2, 13-1) at Fullerton. Debbie Wagner scored 24 points for Fullerton (25-8, 10-4).

In baseball:

Rancho Santiago 7, Long Beach 6--Rancho Santiago scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win a second-round game in the Casey Stengel Tournament at Rancho Santiago. Tim Reynolds walked to open the ninth, Kraig Washington got on on a error, and Nick Santa Cruz then walked to load the bases. Bob Hamelin singled to score Reynolds to tie the score. Todd Lloyd singled in Washington for the victory. Mike Gonzales had two hits, including his second home run in two games for Rancho Santiago.

Fullerton 10, Butte 3--First baseman Rod Klopfer went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored to lead Fullerton (6-2-1) in the second round of the Modesto Tournament. Fullerton’s Emmit Cohick and Shawn Blankenship each had two hits. Winning pitcher Mark Tranberg (2-0) pitched 6 innings, allowed 4 hits and struck out 7.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Fullerton 8, Cypress 1--Led by Steve Lord, who defeated Eric Glade, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1, Fullerton (3-1) swept the singles and cruised at Cypress. Cypress won its only match in the doubles when Glade and David Retrum defeated Ray Diebel and Gary Headding, 6-4, 6-0.

In nonconference softball:

Saddleback 1, Fullerton 0--Patti Taylor pitched a one-hitter and had 13 strikeouts for visiting Saddleback (7-1). The runner was picked off, so Taylor faced the minimum 21 batters, It was the 19th one-hitter for Taylor (6-1) in two seasons.

Rancho Santiago 5, Golden West 0--Karen Beebe pitched a four-hitter for host Rancho Santiago (2-2). Lisa Pedersen had two hits, Christa Lawson had two hits and scored twice and Bonnie Rice had two hits, including a double and an RBI. Rancho Santiago scored three runs in the second inning.

In South Coast Conference men’s volleyball:

Orange Coast College 3, Santa Barbara City 0--OCC, which won 15-12, 15-7, 15-7, was led by Alan Knipe’s nine kills. Matt Silva added eight kills for OCC (8-1, 1-0). Norm Abella had 27 saves for OCC.
