Boys’ Soccer : Mater Dei Takes On Damien

Share

Sure it was the 4-A division playoffs, but it was the same old story for the Mater Dei High School boys’ soccer team last week: Paul Oldham scored a lot and Mater Dei won.

The pressure of the opening round last Thursday didn’t seem to affect the Monarchs, Angelus League champions, and Oldham, in particular. Oldham, a senior center forward, scored three goals--giving him 40 for the season--and Mater Dei cruised to a 4-0 victory over Rolling Hills.

In the second round today, the Monarchs (24-1-1) play at Damien (20-5-2), the second-place team in the Baseline League. The game will be in La Verne at 3 p.m.

Mater Dei was the only Orange County 4-A team to win big in the first round. The four other county teams that advanced to the second round struggled.

Marina (14-8-2) defeated Millikan 2-0 in overtime, and will face Servite today at Servite. The Friars (17-5-2) defeated Villa Park, 1-0, on a goal 78 minutes into the game.

Fountain Valley (16-5-4) edged West Torrance--last year’s co-champion with Mater Dei--on penalty kicks, 3-2, after playing to a scoreless tie in regulation. The Barons will play host to Upland (18-6-2), a wild-card team that eliminated Canyon in the first round with a 4-3 victory.

Santa Ana, which broke a 1-1 tie in overtime to defeat Riverside Poly, 2-1, will play host to Alta Loma (14-4-4), which defeated Edison, 2-1, in overtime.
