THE PREPS : Girls’ Basketball Playoffs : Rathbun Leads Woodbridge Past La Habra

Leslie Rathbun scored 17 of her team’s 21 second-half points to lead Woodbridge High School to a 51-48 victory over La Habra in a Southern Section 2-A second-round girls’ basketball game Wednesday at La Habra.

Rathbun, a sophomore point guard, finished with 23 points despite being held to six points in the first half.

Woodbridge (22-5) will play St. Mary’s in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Kathy Millat, Woodbridge’s leading scorer during the regular season, was limited to eight points before she fouled out with six minutes to play.

“I don’t like to be a ball hog,” Rathbun said. “But when Kathy fouled out, I had to take up the slack.”

La Habra (20-7) rallied from a six-point second-half deficit to lead, 44-42, early in the fourth quarter. Robin Seabrook led La Habra in the second half with 11 points.

But Rathbun helped Woodbridge get back in control. Her three-point basket with 2:45 left gave Woodbridge a 49-45 lead.

Chino 56, Fullerton 44--Fullerton ends its season 14-8. Chino (20-6) will play Covina, a 55-53 winner over Indio in overtime, in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

In the 1-A playoffs:

Newport Christian 35, Rio Hondo Prep 33--Newport Christian’s Becky Berkedile made two free throws with 50 seconds left to clinch the victory over top-seeded Rio Hondo at Newport Christian. Berkedile also had a game-high 20 rebounds. Katiman Malek scored 15 points to lead Newport Christian (15-5). Wendy Doud scored 14 points for Rio Hondo (22-2).
