Winter Sports Notebook : MacLean Piles Up Numbers to Place Him Among Elite

There are few Southern Section players who have ever boasted better numbers than the ones put up by Don MacLean in his high school career.

Wayne Carlander and Tom Lewis would be the only exceptions.

MacLean scored 22 points to help Simi Valley defeat Warren, 74-54, Wednesday night. His 10 rebounds put him on the verge of joining Carlander and Lewis in forming a rather elite trio.

Carlander and Lewis are the only players in Southern Section history in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding.

MacLean has 2,211 points over three seasons. He is two points shy of former Hoover High standout Joe Hillman, who is sixth on the all-time list. Hillman, who scored 2,213 points, is a starting guard at the University of Indiana.

MacLean has 1,067 rebounds and is two short of tying Therman Henderson for 10th on the all-time list.

Carlander, who played one season at El Toro and three at Ocean View, is fifth in scoring with 2,314 points and fourth in rebounding with 1,325.

Lewis, a starter at Pepperdine, is fourth in scoring with 2,456 points and fifth in rebounding with 1,175.

MacLean is averaging 32.4 points and 12.7 rebounds a game this season. He has three of the five best scoring seasons in Simi Valley history.

Forward Shawn DeLaittre has 592 points this season, which is fifth on Simi Valley’s single-season scoring list.

DeLaittre, a 6-5 senior, has 1,504 points in his three-year career, which is second to only MacLean in school history. His 697 rebounds places him third on the school list, behind his father, Larry, who had 1,001 from 1964-67.

Wrestlemania: Chris Kilbane of Newbury Park, Lupe Beltran of Rio Mesa and Adam Flores of Buena won Southern Section wrestling titles Saturday.

Kilbane won the 149-pound class in the 4-A Division; Beltran won the 3-A 102-pound championship; and Flores won the 3-A heavyweight title.

They will compete at the Southern Section Masters meet Saturday at Fountain Valley High.

Tower of power: Shawn Kirkeby, who led Buena to an undefeated Channel League season, has been selected co-player of the year in the league.

Kirkeby, a 6-10, 230-pound senior, shared the award with Paul Johnson, Santa Barbara’s All-Southern section forward. Kirkeby averaged 18.4 points and 10.1 rebounds during the regular season.

Guards Mike Sandoval and Jeff Oliver of Buena joined Kirkeby on the first team. Sandoval led Ventura County players in assists with an average of 10.4 a game. He also averaged 11.4 points. Oliver averaged 14.5 points and 3.9 assists.

Also selected to the first team were Eric Thomas of Rio Mesa and Chris Hantgin and Joe Paul of Ventura.

Thomas averaged 18.7 points and 7.4 rebounds. Hantgin averaged 18.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists. Paul averaged 12.6 points and 8 assists.

Chris’ brother, Nate, was a second-team selection, as was forward Jeff Hereford of Ventura. Adan Valencia of Buena, Kevin Herold of Oxnard and Percy Davis of Hueneme also made the second team.

Soccer playoffs: Three 4-A Division boys’ teams and three 3-A Division girls’ teams from the county have advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal round of the Southern Section soccer playoffs.

Boys’ teams from Royal, Simi Valley and Newbury Park, all from the Marmonte League, won on Tuesday.

Royal (23-1-2) got its 21st shutout of the season from Karl Holt--his 13th in succession--in a 3-0 decision over Oxnard. The Highlanders will play Alta Loma in the quarterfinals. Alta Loma (14-4-4) defeated Santa Ana, 2-1, on penalty kicks Tuesday.

Simi Valley (19-6-2), which defeated Santa Monica, 2-1, on penalty kicks, will play Fountain Valley, a 3-2 winner over Upland. Newbury Park (17-5-1) defeated Lakewood, 1-0, and will meet Damien, which upset top-ranked Mater Dei, 3-2.

The Simi Valley girls’ team, ranked No. 1 in the 3-A, defeated Bishop Montgomery, 3-1, in double-overtime. The Pioneers (23-2-1) will play Buena (18-4-1), a 2-1 winner over Los Alamitos on Tuesday, in the quarterfinals.

Royal, which finished second in the Marmonte League, also advanced with a 1-0 decision over Mater Dei. The Highlanders (17-4-1) will play San Gorgonio, a 2-0 winner over Cypress, Friday. Rio Mesa was defeated by Kennedy of La Palma, 3-1.

In the girls’ 2-A Division, Agoura shut out St. Bonaventure, 7-0, and Moorpark defeated Cate, 1-0.

A memorable player: Karina Hardman scored 32 points for Moorpark College Tuesday night against Cypress in the opening round of the Southern California junior college regional playoffs, but the Lady Raiders still lost, 63-55.

She scored 8 of Moorpark’s first 11 points and the Lady Raiders’ last 13 points. And still that wasn’t enough.

Moorpark made only 23 of 71 field-goal attempts. Three players scored.

“We need a total team effort out there and we just can’t depend on one person to carry us,” Coach Gary Abraham said.

But if there was only one person to depend on, Hardman was a good choice.

She averaged 24 points a game this season to lead the Western State Conference. Perhaps as important, she was like a coach on the court.
