College Highlights : Six-Run 5th Inning Vaults Cerritos Over Valley, 16-4

A three-run home run by Brian Grebeck off of Joey Kane triggered a six-run fifth inning and powered Cerritos College to a 16-4 rout over Valley in a nonconference baseball game Thursday at Cerritos.

Kane, the Valley starter, was chased in the fifth and suffered the loss. Cerritos finished with 12 hits.

Marc Sallin of Valley (3-6) was 2 for 3 with a double and a run batted in.

Cerritos’ Darrell Sherman was 2 for 4 and scored 3 runs. Designated-hitter Tim Phillips was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Cerritos starter Pat Sweet pitched five innings to pick up the win.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

CS Northridge 68, Chapman 66--Freshman Julie Arlotto made the key plays down the stretch at Chapman as the Lady Matadors clinched second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Northridge took a 59-56 lead on a three-point play by Arlotto with 7:42 left in the game. Chapman tied the score three times before Arlotto gave the Lady Matadors the lead for good, 66-64, by making two free throws with 1:28 to play.

Chapman led, 37-34, at halftime despite making eight less field goals than Northridge. The Lady Matadors were called for 18 fouls in the half to only five for Chapman, which made 23 of 28 free throws in the half.

Bridgette Ealy had four assists for Northridge and teammate Kathlene Dixon scored a game-high 23 points.

SOFTBALL

Pierce 16, Antelope Valley 6--Tina Shimoso pitched three shutout innings to improve her record to 3-1 in a nonconference game at home. Shimoso was 2 for 3 at the plate as was teammate Katrina Garcia.

Pierce is 5-1.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce d. Ventura, 9-0--Pierce (4-0, 3-0 in conference play) swept seven singles matches in a Western State Conference match at Pierce. Bill Kearsley, Sang Kim, Mauricio Quiroga, Jonathan Holiday, Tony Cohen, Sam Pitts and Kent Tinsley all recorded wins for Pierce.
