Southern Section Soccer Playoffs : Penalty Kick Puts Newbury Park in Semifinals

Kenny Teasdale scored on a sudden-death penalty kick to lift Newbury Park into the Southern Section 4-A Division semifinal round with a 2-1 upset win over Damien on Friday at Newbury Park.

The score was tied, 1-1, after regulation, and the teams played through two 10-minute overtime periods and a round of penalty kicks without settling the issue.

In sudden death, each team converted its first penalty kicks, but Teasdale kicked in Newbury Park’s second sudden-death shot and Damien’s ensuing shot was blocked by Newbury Park goalie Richard Bengston.

“He sort of psyched him out,” Newbury Park Coach Ted Isenburg said. “He set him up, so I think it might have been a little it of a psych job.”

Bill Kranz scored his 23rd goal of the season on an assist by Avo Meneshian to give Newbury Park (18-5-1) a 1-0 lead. The Panthers entered the playoffs ranked No. 15 in the division. Damien was ranked fifth.

Randy Zera scored for Damien (21-6-2).

The Panthers will play Fountain Valley om Tuesday at a site yet to be determined.

Agoura 5, Ontario Christian 1--Five players scored for Agoura (15-4-3), which advanced to the Southern Section 1-A Division semifinal round with a win at home.

Dominic Zapata, Nelson Townes and Bill Murphy scored in the first half. Brian Jauch and Ronnie Makarem added second-half goals.

Eric Fikse scored Ontario’s goal late in the game.

Agoura plays Santa Paula on Tuesday at a site to be determined.

Calabasas 6, Western Christian 0--The Frontier League co-champion recorded an easy win in the Southern Section 1-A quarterfinal game at Calabasas. Six players scored for Calabasas (17-4-1), with Mike Sackin scoring the first goal nine minutes into the game.

“We got off to a fast start and coasted,” Calabasas Coach John Reich said. “Western Christian is a real good team, but getting those goals quickly just broke them.”

GIRLS

Agoura 5, Ganesha 0--The defending Southern Section 2-A Division champion Chargers took 46 shots on goal and breezed into the semifinal round with a shutout at Agoura.

Agoura (23-0-3), which recorded its 13th victory in a row, plays South Pasadena on Tuesday at a site to be determined.

Dawn Krenik and Heidi Walters each scored two goals and Vanessa Martin added one.

Goalkeeper Trisha Arledge recorded her 19th shutout of the season. Agoura’s defense--spearheaded by Suzy Bowman, Kathy Shean and Jennifer Holmwood--limited Ganesha to three shots on goal.

“Our defenders are very good,” Agoura Coach Dave Godwin said. “They take pride in that zero.”

San Gorgonio 4, Royal 3--The Highlanders lost the Southern Section 3-A Division quarterfinal playoff game at San Gorgonio in a sudden death shoot-out.

After regulation, the scored was tied, 3-3, and the teams played two overtimes and a round of penalty kicks, before Royal’s Tania Schraml missed on the Highlanders’ second sudden-death shot.

San Gorgonio (27-1) converted its second shot to move into Tuesday’s semifinal round against Esperanza, which defeated Kennedy, 4-3, on penalty kicks.

Royal concluded its season at 16-4-2.

Nikki Noyes scored two goals for the Highlanders in regulation and Darlene Dattel scored the other one.
