College Roundup : Pacific Christian Ousted From National Basketball

Pacific Christian College men’s basketball team went cold for the final six minutes and lost to Valley Forge College, 82-69, Friday in the semifinals of the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament at Jimmy Swaggart College in Louisiana.

After falling behind by 13 points in the second half, Pacific Christian rallied behind forward Garrett Crayton (13 points) and guard Mike DeVries (11). A layup by center Burton Lalk cut the deficit to four, 69-65, with six minutes remaining.

But Pacific Christian scored just four points the rest of the way.

Valley Forge built a 16-point lead in the first seven minutes of the game, but saw it cut to eight, 42-34, at halftime. Pacific Christian’s Steve Welch led the comeback, scoring 11 of his team-high 18 points during the first half.

Pacific Christian will play Bay Ridge Christian of Texas today in the third-place game.

In baseball:

Chapman 13, UC Irvine 6--Chapman College (9-10-1) scored six runs in the third inning and four more in the sixth in a nonconference game at Hart Park. Steve Halweg improved his record to 3-0 and Brian Beals went 3-for-6 with 3 RBIs for Chapman.

Portland 4, Cal State Fullerton 2--The Titans (12-7) led, 2-1, in the top of the ninth inning but Portland (5-1-1) was able to come back. With one on and two out, losing pitcher Mark Beck (3-4, 13 strikeouts) loaded the bases by walks. Mike Lee had an infield single to tie the game and the other two runs scored on Mark Brazook’s ensuing throwing error. The Titans had a chance to come back in the bottom of the ninth as Brett Mayne doubled to lead off, but he was stranded. Gary Malychewski improved his record to 2-0 for the Pilots. In an exhibition game earlier in the day, Fullerton defeated Tohoku Fukushi University of Japan, 13-1.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, UC Santa Barbara 3--Irvine’s Dina Trenwith and Haroko Shigekawa teamed up to defeat Julie Sanford and Tracie Johnstone, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6, to give Irvine (10-4) the win at Santa Barbara (6-7). Irvine won the singles, 4-2, and that proved to be the difference.
