Community College Roundup : Hamelin Paces Rancho Santiago

Bobby Hamelin hit two home runs and had four RBIs to lead Rancho Santiago College to a 20-2 victory over the Cal Poly Pomona junior-varsity team Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game at Rancho Santiago.

Hamelin, a sophomore transfer from UCLA, has 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 16 games for Rancho Santiago (15-1).

Wade Clester hit a home run and had four RBIs, and Kraig Washington had three hits and five RBIs for Rancho Santiago. Tim MacNeil (2-0) pitched six innings for the victory.

In other nonconference games:

Cypress 13, Cerritos 4--Jason Freidman had four hits, including two doubles and three RBIs, for host Cypress (14-2). Ken Briggs hit a three-run home run for Cypress in the sixth.

Steve Gill, Tim Churchill, Mark Steinert and Rod DeYoung had two hits each for Cypress. Benny Gonzales gave up one run and six hits in eight innings for the victory.

Orange Coast 7, Golden West 6--Jason Young hit a home run in the ninth to break a 6-6 tie for visiting OCC. The Pirates had built a 6-1 lead through five innings, but Golden West rallied with two in the sixth and three in the seventh to tie it at 6-6. Rick VanderRiet had two hits and three RBIs for Golden West (8-5). Derek Dehdashtian hit a three-run home run, his 10th, for OCC (14-8-1).

El Camino 4, Saddleback 0--El Camino scored two runs in the first when Mike Stone walked, Todd Berthel was hit by a pitch and Tom Shanks doubled to score both. Saddleback is 9-6.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Orange Coast 9, Citrus 0--Eric Rebitzer defeated John Orest, 6-1, 6-2, for host OCC (9-0, 1-0 in conference).

Saddleback 9, Rancho Santiago 0--Mark Hanson of Saddleback beat Thien Dao, 6-1, 6-0, to improve his record to 6-1. Hanson is the third-ranked community college singles player in the state.
