The Southern Section championship boys’ soccer team of Royal High School in Simi Valley violated section bylaws by using a player who had spent two weeks playing for the U.S. Olympic junior national team during the season, officials said.

According to Southern Section bylaws, a player becomes ineligible if he competes on an outside team in the same sport during the season of that sport.

In similar cases , the section has stripped teams of their titles. But officials would not speculate about possible sanctions against Royal. They said that they would meet Monday to discuss possible penalties. Royal won the 4-A Division title with a 1-0 victory over Newbury Park in the championship game March 4.

Officials learned this week that senior Cam Rast, who played against Newbury Park, had played in the Soviet Union with the junior Olympic team in January. Royal had obtained Southern Section approval in February for Rast to travel with the junior Olympic team to Guatemala but had neglected to notify the Southern Section of his earlier trip.
