San Jose State Shuts Out USIU, 4-0

San Jose State scored two runs in the fourth and two in the seventh to defeat United States International University, 4-0, Monday in a nonconference baseball game at San Jose State.

USIU’s Kevin Tahan and Alberto Rodriguez each went 2 for 4. Wally Trice (5-3) took the loss. USIU is 9-15-1; San Jose State is 12-15.

YOUTH SOCCER

The El Cajon USA Mavericks boys’ under-14 soccer team defeated the La Jolla Nomads, 4-3, on penalty kicks Saturday at Cal State Bakersfield to win the California Youth Soccer Assn. state championship.

The USA Mavericks will play in the Western Regional tournament at Phoenix, Ariz., in June.

Eric Boettger scored on the final penalty kick, which broke a 3-3 tie. Todd Tiettra, 13, a 6-2 forward, dribbled the length of the field and scored to tie the match, 1-1, with 10 minutes remaining. The teams had tied in their previous two meetings.

San Diego County was represented by four other teams at the state tournament. The Bernardo Hornets defeated Triad Soccer Club of Mission Viejo, 3-0 in the boys’ under-10 age group.

Manhattan Beach defeated the San Dieguito Surf, 3-1, in the boys’ under-12 age group, and the Escondido Heat defeated North Huntington Beach, the defending national champion, 5-4, on penalty kicks in the boys’ under-13 age group.

In the girls’ under-14 age group, Mission Viejo defeated San Diego Villa, 2-0. Villa is a group of 12-year olds playing in a higher age group.

MEN’S GOLF

The University of Nevada Las Vegas leads with a 27-hole total of 458 after the first day of the seventh annual United States International University men’s golf invitational at the San Luis Rey Downs Country Club.

USIU’s first team team is seventh in the 18-team tournament with a score of 467, San Diego State University is 10th at 475, USIU’s second team is 12th at 480 and the University of San Diego is 13th at 483.

USIU’s Jim Wahl is tied for second with a 111, and USD’s Joe Schabacker and SDSU’s Scott Almquist are tied for 15th at 116.
