Roundup : Helix Tops Granite Hills Again, 6-1 : Navarro (4-0) Gives Up 2 Hits in First, None Thereafter

Rick Navarro pitched a two-hitter, stuck out nine and walked his first three batters this season as Helix High School defeated Granite Hills, 6-1, in a Grossmont League baseball game Tuesday at Granite Hills.

Navarro (4-0) gave up both hits in the scoreless first and also hit three batters.

Helix catcher Rick Page was 2 for 3 and hit a solo home run in the seventh. Rich Haar was 3 for 3 and Spike Mitchell 2 for 4 for Helix (6-1 overall, 1-0 in league play).

Mike Raskind (1-2) took the loss for Granite Hills (4-3, 0-1).

Helix beat Granite Hills on Saturday, 15-6, in the third-place game of the Hilltop/Moose tournament.

In other Grossmont League games:

Valhalla 3, El Cajon 1--Mark Iveson hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Bob Runeborg picked up the complete-game victory for visiting Valhalla (5-4, 1-0). Kevin Davis of El Cajon (4-3, 0-1) allowed three hits in a losing effort.

El Capitan 6, Monte Vista 4--Zak Salmon was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, including a 2-run double that scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning, for El Capitan (4-2, 1-0). Nino DiMaio (2-1) was the winner. Monte Vista is 4-5 and 0-1.

Grossmont 10, Santana 2--Roy Neder threw a 2-hitter and Joe Donlon was 2 for 3, including a 3-run homer in a 6-run third inning as Grossmont handed Santana (6-1, 0-1) its first defeat. Donlon also had a double and finished with four RBIs. Jeff Barry (3-1) started and suffered his first loss of the season.

CITY EASTERN Morse 4, Patrick Henry 1--David Grigsby scored a run and was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base for Morse (4-4, 1-0). Grigsby’s 2 RBIs came on a 2-out, fifth-inning single and broke open a 2-1 game. Javier Brown (1-0) struck out four and walked one for the victory at Morse. Corey Powell struck out six and walked one in taking the loss for Patrick Henry (4-2, 0-1).

Point Loma 11, Serra 5--Jeff Gattis (3-0) hit two solo home runs and picked up the victory for Point Loma (5-2-1, 1-0). Sabino Loaiza had 4 RBIs for Point Loma and made several outstanding plays at shortstop. Serra is 4-4 and 0-1.

CITY CENTRAL St. Augustine 5, San Diego 2--Mark Strawbridge (2-0) earned the victory for St. Augustine (2-4, 1-0) and was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs. St. Augustine got to San Diego’s Sean Tucker for three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Steve Baird had two triples for San Diego (5-3, 0-1).

Crawford 5, Lincoln 3--Crawford led, 5-1, and held off a seventh-inning rally to defeat Lincoln at Crawford. Jeff Wilcox was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs to lead Crawford (4-4, 1-0). A.J. Leighton (2-2) went the distance for the victory. Lincoln is 1-5 and 0-1.

Hoover 9, Christian 3--Felipe Preciado (3-0) struck out nine for Hoover (5-4, 1-0). Danny Carter drove in two runs with a double in the five-run fourth. Hoover’s Gus Garcia was 2 for 2. Bo Handran took the loss for Christian (0-1 in league play).

CITY WESTERN

Mission Bay 5, Clairemont 3--Sean Rees went 2 for 4 and drove in 2 runs as Mission Bay (6-0-1, 1-0) overcame 4 errors to open league play with a victory. Tom Lefever was the winning pitcher, and Vic Beltran took the loss for Clairemont (2-6, 0-1).

La Jolla 8, Kearny 4--Darren Kaffka hit a bases-loaded triple as La Jolla scored five runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Brent Woodall was 2 for 2 with an RBI and scored twice for La Jolla (6-2, 1-0). Adam Lenain (2-1) was the winning pitcher, and Brian Archer (1-2) took the loss for Kearny (2-3-1, 0-1).

USDHS 5, University City 3--After falling behind, 3-2, in the sixth, University of San Diego High School (3-3, 1-0) rallied for three runs in the seventh. Tony Moeder drove in two runs with a double, and Brent Whelan knocked in Moeder with a single. Matt Seisel went all the way for USDHS, and Jeff Seiver (1-2) took the loss for University City (5-3, 0-1).

NONLEAGUE Torrey Pines 5, Chula Vista 3--Bob McGriff and John Lynch each had two hits, and Ross Dixon doubled in an insurance run in the seventh for Torrey Pines (8-0). Bob Kennedy had three stolen bases for Torrey Pines, and Mike Hochleutner (2-0) earned the victory.

Fallbrook 12, El Camino 6--Second baseman Chris Dalton belted home runs in the first and second innings to lead host Fallbrook (4-2). Dalton went 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs. Rickey Spears went 3 for 4 with a solo homer in the fourth for El Camino (1-5).

Bonita Vista 24, Marian 5--Bonita Vista tied for 10th on the San Diego Section list for most runs in a game with the rout at home. David Tappan was 3 for 3 with a double, John Solomon was 2 for 4 with a triple and 4 RBIs and Teddy Ehrhardt was 3 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBIs. Randy Abshier (3-0) got the victory and was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs for Bonita Vista (6-3). Marian is 1-5-1.

Benson Tech 3, Sweetwater 2, (8 innings)--Gerald Bolden scored the winning run for Benson Tech (1-1), a team from Portland, Ore. Bolden singled, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on Sweetwater second baseman Paul Samson’s error. Benjie Gil and Javier Hernandez each had two singles for Sweetwater (5-4-1).

San Marcos 10, Mt. Carmel 4--Marc Villalobos was 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs, Bill McElroy hit a 3-run homer in the fifth and had 4 RBIs and Eric Rojas hit a solo home run in the fourth for San Marcos (4-1-1). Toby Lehman (2-0) earned the victory. Mt. Carmel is 4-3.
