High School Spring Sports : Canoga Park Wins on Late Double

Kelly Mitchell doubled home the winning run in the seventh inning to lift Canoga Park to a 5-4 victory over Grant in a nonleague softball game Tuesday.

With the score tied, 4-4, Carla Downs scored from third base on Mitchell’s double.

Traci Buck allowed six hits and six walks in going the distance for the win.

In other softball games:

Alemany 2, L.A. Baptist 1--Jill Greenwood went 2 for 3 with a home run and drove in both Alemany runs in the nonleague game.

North Hollywood 12, Kennedy 10--Pitcher Jennifer Rothstein hit a three-run double, one of eight North Hollywood hits. Leticia Carranza added a triple and Lynn Lampert doubled for the Huskies.

Saugus 8, Quartz Hill 2--Jo Ann Farkas hit a two-run triple and Dinah Walker doubled home a pair of runs for Saugus in the Golden League game.

Thousand Oaks 15, Channel Islands 1--Jamie Heggen hit a two-run home run and Amy Chellevold added a run-scoring triple for Thousand Oaks in the Marmonte League game.

Newbury Park 1, Simi Valley 0--Laree Reynolds singled home the winning run in the seventh in the Marmonte League game.

Pitcher Lea Lopez (2-1) allowed four hits and struck out three. The Panthers improved to 4-3-1, 2-0.

Agoura 13, Nordhoff 3--Christine McComb had two hits and drove in four runs for the Chargers in the Frontier League game.

Royal 3, Westlake 0--Danielle DeVan allowed only two hits and struck out nine batters without walking any to lead the Highlanders to a Marmonte League win.

Calabasas 4, Santa Clara 3--Calabasas pitcher Julie Astrachan struck out Santa Clara’s Eileen Coverrubies with the tying run on second base to end the Frontier League game

Bell-Jeff 9, Hoover 4--Stacey Smock had four hits and four RBIs and was the winning pitcher in a nonleague game at Bell-Jeff.

Oak Park 10, Carpinteria 8--The Eagles scored two runs in the ninth inning after giving up five in the bottom of the seventh to win a Tri-Valley League game.

Heidi Ogawa led off the ninth with a triple and scored on Wendy Wootton’s single.

Ribet Academy 15, California Christian 14--Kate Stoll had three hits and four RBIs for the winners in the Heritage League game at Ribet Academy. The game was called after four innings because of darkness.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Crespi d. Notre Dame, 15-5, 15-5, 15-9--Ken Lynch had eight kills and Chris McGee added five to lead the Celts to a Del Rey League victory at Notre Dame.

Lynch, a 6-4 junior middle blocker, also had two blocks for Crespi (8-0, 3-0).

Royal d. Hart, 15-5, 14-16, 15-8, 15-2--Craig Parker and Cory Herbert each had 15 kills to lead the Highlanders.

Ethan Weiss added 12 kills for Royal (5-0) and Robert Fungaroli had six blocks. Pete Quinlan led Hart (1-4) with 12 kills.

Campbell Hall d. Mary Star, 15-11, 15-3, 15-3--Tim Sutton led the Vikings with 13 kills and six blocks in a Camino Real League victory at Mary Star.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Kennedy d. North Hollywood, 4-3--David Schwartz broke a 3-3 match tie with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win in a nonleague match.

Donald Gutterman won, 6-2, 6-2, as Kennedy’s No. 1 singles player.
