Prep Baseball : Austin Powers Mater Dei Past Servite

Outfielder Jim Austin hit his fourth home run in his last five games and pitcher Tony Pena allowed only four hits and an unearned run as Mater Dei High School edged rival Servite, 2-1, Monday in Angelus League play at Santa Ana.

The victory moved the Monarchs (9-1, 3-1) into a tie for first place in the six-team league with Servite (7-3, 3-1). Mater Dei meets Bishop Amat (8-2, 2-1) at 3:15 today.

Austin opened with a towering 375-foot homer over the left-field scoreboard in the first inning for his 23rd RBI of the season. The Monarchs scored in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Lionel Hastings that scored Rob Ickes. Servite scored an unearned run in the seventh inning.

Pena (3-1) mixed a good fastball with a split-fingered fastball, striking out eight and allowing only one walk. Servite’s only other scoring threat came in the third inning when the Friars put runners on second and third with one out. Pena struck out Mark Tacconelli and got Mike Giuseffi to ground out to end the inning.

Pat Wesner, Servite’s designated hitter, had two of the Friars’ four hits, but struck out to end the game. Andy Croghan (4-1) allowed only four hits and struck out five in a losing cause.

Servite played without Coach Mike McNary, who was attending his mother’s funeral in Utah.

In the Anaheim Lions tournament:

Western 3, Westminster 2--Pitcher Troy Babbitt got the victory in relief for Western (7-4-1), giving up one hit in two innings in a championship round game.

Kennedy 12, Rim of the World 2--Craig Roah, Steve Rath, Peter Montera and Greg Hansell each had three hits to lead a 19-hit Kennedy (7-6) attack. Montera pitched a complete game.

Sonora 6, Garden Grove 1--Sonora pitchers Chris Ortiz and John Nalbandin combined for a one-hitter for Sonora (4-6) in a consolation game.

Troy 6, Riordan 6--The score was tied after seven innings in a consolation game, but Troy advances on the number of baserunners who reached third base. Tom Wilson was 2 for 4 with a ground-rule double and a triple for Troy (4-4-1).

Dana Hills 11, University 2--Mike Kisling (4-0) allowed three hits and struck out four to lead Dana Hills (8-4) to a consolation-round victory. Center fielder Craig Lombardi hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, Dana Hills’ 20th home run of the season.

Canyon 9, Woodbridge 7--Joe Furukawa went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and John Cummings went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs to lead Canyon (7-4) in the consolation bracket. Canyon had 11 hits.

In the Bolsa Grande tournament:

Orange Lutheran 4, Costa Mesa 1--Sophomore pitcher Kent Dowding (4-0) remained undefeated for Orange Lutheran (11-3), allowing four hits in seven innings. Chris Maniogue drove in the winning run on a fifth-inning single.

Capistrano Valley 6, Newport Harbor 2--Winning pitcher Brian Walker (1-3) struck out seven to lead Capistrano Valley (5-6) in the championship quarterfinals.

Lynwood 5, Santiago 2 (12 innings)--Lynwood’s George Perez hit two home runs in the consolation game at Rancho Alamitos, including a two-run home run in the 12th inning to break a 2-2 tie.

Bolsa Grande 2, Sante Fe 1--Winning pitcher Jerry Maldonado (2-3) allowed just two hits and struck out 11 to lead Bolsa Grande (3-7) in the consolation round. Maldonado also scored the game’s winning run in the sixth.

Los Amigos 7, Glenn 0--Los Amigos won on a forfeit when Glenn could not field enough players for a team.

In the Santa Ana Elks tournament:

Mission Viejo 8, Millikan 5--Chris Boger (3-1) pitched seven innings, giving up six hits and striking out five in a quarterfinal game. Eric Ekdahl was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

Mission Viejo 9, Saddleback 4--Mission Viejo’s Erik Ekdahl was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and one home run in the semifinal game. The victory puts the defending tournament champion Diablos (9-2) into the final for the third straight year.

Saddleback 3, Villa Park 2--Winning pitcher Mike Arroyos (3-0) gave up five hits in seven innings for Saddleback (9-3) in a quarterfinal game. George Canham was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
