STATWATCH : Simi Valley Trots Home on Own Power

Share

In its third--and last--trip to the Colonial tournament in Orlando, Fla., Simi Valley High left the Sunshine State with more than a farewell and a handshake. The Pioneers also left some battered fences.

Simi Valley pounded out 58 hits in five games and batted .387. Darin Furlong led the charge with 11 hits in 19 at-bats, including 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and 8 runs scored. He was also named to the all-tournament team--the only Pioneer so honored.

Scott Sharts was 8 for 17 with 6 RBIs and 2 homers, including his 26th, which broke the Southern Section record for career homers. Junior Terry Hill was 7 for 20 with 3 homers and 8 RBIs.

Add home runs: Westlake has hit seven home runs in its past four games, including two each by Craig Cooper and John Stephens. Both of Cooper’s blasts came in one inning. . . . Chatsworth clubbed six home runs in winning the Colonial Baseball Classic. Rex McMackin and John Haselbusch each hit two and Joel Wolfe and David Waco each had one.

Add Colonial Classic: McMackin, who was 6 for 11, including a double and five runs batted in, was selected to the all-tournament team. Haselbusch was 4 for 11 with three RBIs. Wolfe was 4 for 15 with one RBI.

Saugus catcher Jared Snyder was 5 for 12 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Centurions. Center fielder Darrell Davis was 6 for 13 with two runs scored.

Base stealing: Birmingham, which had not run much during its first three games, stole 13 bases in 14 attempts in the Holt-Goodman tournament. Birmingham finished 3-1 in tournament play and missed the championship game by a run, oddly enough, because of idle baserunners. In a 7-6 loss to Westchester in the semifinals, the Braves stranded six runners in the final three innings.

Extra points: In the nine-year history of its baseball program, Westlake has never defeated Camarillo. The Warriors play at Camarillo on Friday. . . . Royal’s Travis Kinyoun has been hit by pitches 10 times in 13 games. Kinyoun, who has been moved from fifth to cleanup in the lineup, has an on-base percentage of .643 (27 for 42). His batting average is .400 (10 for 25).

Offense: Granada Hills second baseman Chris Murphy, who batted .278 last season, is 10 for 20 with 10 runs scored and 8 runs batted in. First baseman Darryl Stephenson is 11 for 20 with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs. . . . St. Genevieve (10-1) has outscored its opponents, 121-35, including a 71-11 margin during its current five-game win streak. The Valiants, who are averaging 11 runs a game, have outscored Santa Fe League opponents, 56-5, in four games.
