Irving Fryar, New England Patriots wide receiver, was indicted in Mount Holly, N.J., on charges of carrying loaded weapons in the state while home for a visit with his mother.

Fryar, 25, was charged with unlawful possession of a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, a .38-caliber handgun and hollow-point bullets that were loaded into the handgun.

Fryar, the NFL’s leading punt returner during the Patriots’ American Football Conference championship season in 1985, faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, although it is unlikely he will be imprisoned because he has no previous criminal record.

Fryar was arrested Feb. 14 after a state trooper stopped him for speeding on Route 530 in Pemberton Township.

Fryar is not licensed to carry the firearms in New Jersey, but he is licensed in Massachusetts.
