The Boston Red Sox signed newly acquired relief pitcher Lee Smith to a two-year contract extension lasting through the 1990 season, General Manager Lou Gorman announced.
Smith, 30, was obtained during the off-season from the Chicago Cubs for pitchers Al Nipper and Calvin Schiraldi. Smith had 181 saves starting the 1988 season, 11th all-time.
