Tennis Roundup : Unseeded Ross Knocks Off No. 4 Teltscher, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4

John Ross, rated 96th in the world, knocked off fourth-seeded Eliot Teltscher, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, Thursday on a day of upsets in the second round of the $315,000 Volvo tennis tournament at Chicago.

Teltscher squared the third set, 4-4, by breaking serve, but Ross broke right back and held serve to close out the match.

In other matches, second-seeded Tim Mayotte defeated Argentina’s Horacio de la Pena, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; South Africa’s Gary Muller beat fifth-seeded Christo van Rensberg, also of South Africa, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2; Scott Davis surprised No. 6 Ramesh Krishnan of India, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, and No. 7 Dan Goldie overcame Jim Pugh, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Helen Kelesi of Canada upset fourth-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany, 6-4, 7-5, to reach the quarterfinals of the Family Circle Magazine Cup at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

In other matches, top-seeded Martina Navratilova downed Eva Pfaff of West Germany, 6-3, 6-2; second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina turned back Wiltrud Probst of West Germany, 6-4, 6-1; sixth-seeded Zina Garrison defeated Bettina Fulco of Argentina, 6-2, 6-1; eighth-seeded Raffaella Reggi of Italy beat South Africa’s Elna Reinach, 7-6, 6-3; Lori McNeil ousted Andrea Holikova of Czechoslovakia, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, and third-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria trounced 10th-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy, 6-1, 6-1.
