THE PREPS : Baseball : Pacific Makes It 11 in a Row by Defeating Rancho Alamitos, 6-4

Bill Tomkins drove in two runs with a sixth-inning single as Pacifica High School rallied for its 11th straight victory, defeating Rancho Alamitos, 6-4, Friday in a Garden Grove League baseball game at Pacifica.

Rancho Alamitos led, 4-3, going into the bottom of the sixth, but Pacifica (11-3, 4-0) loaded the bases with no out. Sean MacEkern singled home the tying run, and Tomkins followed with a single to give the Mariners a 6-4 lead.

Todd Long pitched four innings of relief for the victory. Long (6-1) entered the game in the fourth with the bases loaded and no out. He worked out of the jam and didn’t allow a run the rest of the way.

Tomkins had three hits and Shelby Hart two for Pacifica.

Bill Hillstead had two hits for Rancho Alamitos (2-2 in league).

In other Garden Grove League games:

Kennedy 4, Garden Grove 1--Greg Hansell (3-1) threw a one-hitter, striking out five, for Kennedy (9-8, 3-1) at Garden Grove. Hansell also was 2 for 3. Ernie Franco went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Peter Montera drove in two runs for Kennedy.

Santiago 12, Bolsa Grande 7--Scott Kissell had a two-run double and Paul Cripper doubled in another run as Santiago scored three runs in the fifth inning to tie it, 7-7. Santiago (5-10, 1-3) scored a run in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead and four unearned runs in the seventh for the final score. Carlos Leon took over in the fifth inning to get the victory. Eric Schreifels had three hits and an RBI for Bolsa Grande (4-10, 1-3).

In the Century League:

Foothill 6, Villa Park 2--Mike Higgins (4-1) of Foothill (9-6, 4-1) allowed three hits, struck out three and walked five en route to a complete-game victory at Foothill. Scott Barton went 3 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and a triple. Eric Garcia went 2 for 3 with two runs and Paul Thornton went 2 for 4 to lead Foothill.

Canyon 9, Santa Ana Valley 3--John Cummings drove in two runs to lead Canyon (10-5, 3-2) at Santa Ana Valley. Ralph Pacheco, Dan Puskas and Joe Furukawa each had two hits for Canyon. Furukawa also scored three runs. Scott Myers (4-1) went the distance, striking out six, for the victory. Court Vickmore had two hits and an RBI for Santa Ana Valley (0-5 in league).

Santa Ana 7, El Modena 3--Julio Vargas, a junior catcher, hit a grand slam in the first inning for host Santa Ana (8-7, 3-2). It was the third home run of the season for Vargas, who was 2 for 3 with four RBIs. Oscar Luna had a hit and scored two runs for also for Santa Ana. Bob Reimers (5-1) pitched a five-hitter.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 5, Buena Park 0--Tom Wilson hit his fourth home run of the season to lead Troy (6-6-1, 3-2). Ed Tatar had two hits, including a double and two RBIs. Brad Zeppieri (1-0) pitched seven innings for the victory. Buena Park limited Troy to six hits but made six errors.

Sonora 5, La Habra 4--Kyle Schaetzl led off the top of the seventh inning with a home run to give Sonora the victory at La Habra. It was the sixth home run of the season for Schaetzl, who had three hits and two RBIs. La Habra led, 2-0, after three innings, but Sonora (7-8, 3-2) scored four runs in the fourth. Brent Smith had a two-run single in the inning. Stuart Cochran (1-2). Darren Stevens went 2 for 4 for La Habra (4-1 in league).

In the Olympic League:

Valley Christian 11, Orange Lutheran 9--Frank Hong went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Brent VanKampen went 2 for 3 with three RBIs to lead host Valley Christian (8-4, 2-1). Matt Wilson and Dave Elliott each had two hits for Orange Lutheran (12-4, 3-1).

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 8, Corona del Mar 2--Sean Therien (4-2) threw a four-hitter, struck out five and did not walk a batter to lead Saddleback (11-4, 5-0) at Corona del Mar (4-6, 2-3). Offensively for Saddleback, George Saldana and Paul O’Hearn hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning and Therien hit a solo shot in the third. Kevin Maas hit a two run home run in the sixth for Corona del Mar.

Tustin 5, Newport Harbor 4--Eric Grove drove in three runs to lead Tustin (10-5, 4-1) to victory at Newport Harbor. George Menges went 3 for 3 for Tustin. Ralph Grajeda (3-) went 5 innings for the victory. Brad Zenz went 2 for 3 for Newport Harbor (3-11, 1-3). 10-5, 4-1.

Estancia 8, University 1--Tony Mendoza gave up five hits and had three strikeouts to lead visiting Estancia (10-5, 3-2). Frank Herman had two hits, scored two runs and had a triple and an RBI, Mark Hartly had two hits, scored two runs and had a triple, and Lancy Ely had a hit and two runs for Estancia.

Orange 4, Costa Mesa 1--Aaron VanDerAa pitched a two-hitter and had 10 strikeouts for host Orange (3-2, 7-7). The score was tied, 1-1, in the sixth when Orange rallied for four runs. Scott McMahon opened with a double and scored on a squeeze by John Rodriguez. Mel Linquist and Jesus Romo had RBI doubles also in the sixth inning for Orange.

Laguna Hills 11, Laguna Beach 0--Ron Kortman pitched a one-hitter and hit a two-run home run for host Laguna Hills (6-8, 3-2). Kortman (3-4), a junior right-hander also walked a hitter but allowed just two baserunners. The only hit was a first-inning double by Danny Lane. Kortman’s home run, his second this season, came in the sixth inning. Chris Sheff had three hits for Laguna Hills, which had 11.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 4, Edison 0--Chad Phillips (2-0) of host Huntington Beach (12-3, 3-2) struck out five in a complete-game shutout of Edison. Chris Bowen went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Oilers.

In the Academy League:

Avalon 11, Newport Christian 1--Steve Jones (1-2) threw a 3-hitter and had 10 strikeouts for host Avalon on Catalina Island. Phil Voci had a home run, double, triple and five RBIs for Avalon (1-2 in league games).

In nonleague games:

Claremont 8, Mesrobian 6--Derek Evans pitched a 5-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead host Claremont (3-3) at Garden Grove Park. Taro Thomas had two-run single in the sixth inning to give Claremont an 8-4 lead. Rick Lind had two doubles and two RBIs for Claremont. Mesrobian is 1-4.
