Prep Roundup : Los Alamitos Defeats Canyon to Win Challenge

The Los Alamitos High School tennis team defeated Canyon, 39-37, to win the Canyon team challenge tournament Saturday at Fullerton College.

At No. 1 singles, Riva DaSilva beat Jason DeFalco, 8-4, to lead the Griffins, who lost to Canyon in a match earlier this season. DaSilva did not play in the teams’ earlier meeting.

Los Alamitos won the singles matches, 2-1, and the doubles, 2-1, but the tournament’s scoring system kept Canyon close. The total score was determined by number of games won in each set.

Canyon’s No. 1 doubles team of Brad Mills and Jose Lynch beat Han Lin and Dave Shulten, 8-0.

In the third-place match, Servite defeated Valencia, 36-31. Jeff Belloli, Servite’s No. 1 singles player, won, 8-4, over Danny Yu of Valencia to lead a sweep of the singles matches. Valencia swept the doubles matches, however.

In Canyon tournament softball:

Edison 3, Simi Valley 2 (9 innings)--In the top of the ninth, Jyll Pattinson singled with one out and was sacrificed to second. Krista Eckert doubled her in to give Edison (10-4) the victory over Simi Valley (13-6) in the third-place championship game at Peralta Park. Terry Carpenter, who was named the most valuable pitcher of the tournament, pitched a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts and had a perfect game until she walked the leadoff batter in the seventh.

Valencia 2, Kennedy 1--Michele Granger of Valencia (13-3) threw her eighth no-hitter of the season in the seventh-place game of the Canyon tournament. Granger (12-1) had 11 strikeouts and no walks. Valerie Finley went 2 for 2 with an RBI triple in the fourth and scored the winning run after she singled, was sacrificed to second and came home on Danette Davis’ single in the bottom of the seventh.
