El Segundo Succumbs to Rally, Falls to Notre Dame in Tourney

Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning on Saturday night to snap a 3-3 tie and defeat El Segundo, 7-4, in the second round of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Baseball Tournament at Redondo.

El Segundo (10-6) loaded the bases on three straight walks to open its half of the eighth, but the Eagles managed only one run against reliever Rob Kastenbader. Steve Sutherland struck out, Dave Lubs grounded into a fielder’s choice to score a run and Erik Evans flied out to end the game.

Jeff Antoon led off the eighth for Notre Dame (11-4) with a home run to left field. Kevin Milligan later delivered a two-run double and Kevin Crosby capped the uprising with an RBI single.

Joe Montanez led the Eagles with two hits in three at-bats and three RBI. He hit a two-run single in the fourth and tied the game, 3-3, with an RBI single in the sixth.

St. Bernard 6, Serra 5--Royce Clayton’s three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a come-from-behind win and kept the Vikings tied for first place in the Camino Real League.

St. Bernard (4-0 in league, 10-3 overall) will play league co-leader St. Monica at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday for sole possession of first place.

Serra (1-3, 5-13), which suffered its fifth loss of the week, scored three runs in the third on back-to-back home runs by Chris Jones and Paul Beaman to take a 4-0 lead.

Redondo 2, Downey 0--Pitcher Scott Davison had 13 strikeouts in five innings to improve to 6-0 and Henry Schelb finished up with two innings of one-hit, four-strikeout relief as the Sea Hawks (15-1) moved into the quarterfinals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament with a win at home.

The Sea Hawks will play St. John Bosco (9-4), an 8-1 winner over Westchester (7-7-1), next Saturday.

South Torrance 10, Dominguez 9--Ben Norton drove in four runs, Jason Walton had two RBI and sophomore pitcher Chris Castillion picked up a win and a save as the Spartans (6-6-1) held on for a consolation win in the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament.

Mary Star 4, Murphy 3--Rick Ibarra doubled home the winning run in the ninth and pitched three shutout innings of relief to give the Stars (2-2, 8-6) a Camino Real League win at Murphy.

Mira Costa 11, Gardena 5--David Jund homered twice to lead the host Mustangs (5-8) to a consolation win in the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament. Gardena, the Marine League leader, fell to 5-4.

Miraleste 13, Chadwick 8--Freshmen Paul Lemire and Mike Ryan hit a grand slam and a three-run homer, respectively, to power the Marauders (7-7) in a non-league game at Chadwick.

Taft 5, Palos Verdes 4--Glenn Nahmias’ fly ball went off the glove of center fielder Spuds Powell, scoring the winning run in the eighth inning and sending host Taft to the quarterfinals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament. The Sea Kings fell to 5-9.

Alemany 7, North Torrance 3--Alemany scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie in a consolation game of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament at North. The Saxons dropped to 9-5.
