New Jersey Nets assistant coach Bob Wenzel...
New Jersey Nets assistant coach Bob Wenzel has been named head coach at Rutgers, his alma mater.
Wenzel also had reportedly been considered for the vacant coaching job at Providence.
Wenzel emerged as the top candidate for the Scarlet Knights job earlier last week after Tom Penders of Rhode Island spurned overtures from Rutgers and took the coaching job at Texas.
Wenzel came to the Nets this year after turning around the basketball program at Jacksonville. He had been head coach at Jacksonville since 1981, where he compiled an 86-81 record.
In 1985, he faced brain surgery for a leaking aneurysm, from which he has recovered.
Wenzel replaces Craig Littlepage, who was fired March 15 after three years with the Scarlet Knights.
