High School Spring Sports : Westlake Tops Royal in Tennis, 17-1

Westlake High, the No. 2-ranked tennis team in the Southern Section, continued to feast on Marmonte League opponents with an impressive 17-1 win Wednesday at Royal.

Darin Pleasant, Westlake’s No. 1 singles player, won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1. The Warriors also received help from an unexpected source as David Lieu, recently recalled from the junior varsity, won two of three sets.

Westlake is 6-0 in league play and 11-2 overall.

In other tennis matches:

El Camino Real d. Chatsworth, 6-1--Mark Sundahl and Oscar Picon swept their matches in El Camino Real’s West Valley League opener at Chatsworth.

Poly d. Fairfax, 4-3--After losing the top three singles matches, Poly (6-2, 2-0) came back to win the No. 4 singles match and all three doubles matches to upset Fairfax in East Valley League play.

Cleveland d. Canoga Park, 7-0--Jason Rich, Cleveland’s No. 1 singles player, cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win to pace the Cavaliers (5-2, 1-0) in a West Valley League opener.

Kennedy d. Granada Hills, 6-1--Donald Gutterman recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win as the Golden Cougars (7-0, 1-0) took the Mid-Valley League opener.

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame 4, Alemany 0--Becca Berline threw a five-hitter for Notre Dame in a San Fernando Valley League opener at Alemany. Tracy Benn had three hits and two RBIs for Notre Dame.

Bell-Jeff 13, St. Genevieve 2--Bell-Jeff scored in every inning of its San Fernando Valley League opener. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Chaminade 9, Louisville 8--Jennifer Fearing’s two-out, two-run double tied the score in the seventh and Kim Gutierrez doubled in two more runs to give Chaminade its second consecutive win in San Fernando Valley League play.

VOLLEYBALL

Chatsworth d. Granada Hills, 15-12, 15-5, 15-10--Larry Fernandez had 15 kills to lead the Chancellors (9-2, 6-0) to their 47th consecutive West Valley League victory.

Kennedy d. Birmingham, 15-11, 15-8, 15-6--Brett Merritt had 12 kills to lead the Golden Cougars (5-4, 4-3) to a West Valley League victory at Kennedy.
