Father and Son Garner Postseason 1-A Soccer Honors

Joe Magdaleno, Jr., of Santa Paula High, was named this week Southern Section 1-A Division co-offensive soccer player of the year and his father, Joe Magdaleno Sr., was named co-coach of the year. The Magdalenos led Santa Paula to a record of 18-4 and to the 1-A championship.

Paul Ratcliffe of 1-A runner-up Calabasas was the other co-offensive player and Calabasas Coach John Reich was co-coach. Santa Paula defeated Calabasas, 1-0, in the final.

Senior defender Marco Sanchez and senior midfielder Jose Elizarraras of Santa Paula were also named to the first team, and junior midfielder Gilbert Elizarraras was a second-team selection.

Fillmore’s Jesus Martinez, a junior midfielder, and Gerardo Vaca, a senior forward, were named to the second team along with Hein Ho, a junior defender from Moorpark.

Cam Rast of Royal was named 4-A Division defensive player of the year and Royal’s Peter Schraml was selected as 4-A coach of the year. Royal captured the title with a 1-0 win over Newbury Park and had a record of 26-1-2.

Richard Bengston, a senior goalkeeper, Matt Rast, a senior forward, and senior midfielder Edwin Vela were first-team selections for Royal. Senior forwards Bill Kranz of Newbury Park and Vince Thomas of Ventura were also named to the first team.

Senior forward Ismael Banuelos of Oxnard and sophomore defender Craig Hampton of Simi Valley were second-team picks.

Senior defender David Reinhardt of Royal and senior forward Cobi Jones of Westlake were chosen for the third team.

Kim Mahar and Patsy Leivas of Buena Kerry Bertoldo and Suzanne Bryan of Simi Valley were named to the girls’ 3-A first team.

Michele Peltonen of Moorpark was named to the 2-A first team.
