Roundup : Triple Play Saves Costa Mesa’s Victory

Share

Costa Mesa High School built an 8-4 lead through six innings but needed a game-ending triple play to hold off Laguna Beach, 8-7, Thursday in a Pacific Coast League baseball game at Costa Mesa.

In the seventh inning, Laguna Beach loaded the bases with no outs against starter Mike Cutler (3-2). Scott Snedeker replaced Cutler and gave up a run-scoring single to Jeremy Megros and a two-run single to Danny Lane, leaving runners on first and second.

Pete Schmitt grounded to third baseman Ed Sidawi, and while Megros retreated toward second, Sidawi threw to second baseman Deron Mashburn to force Lane. But Lane was called for interference, which automatically doubled up Schmitt at first. And Megros, who apparently thought he had been called out, stepped off second and was tagged by Mashburn for the final out.
