High School Baseball : La Salle Pries Chaminade From First, 1-0

Chaminade dropped into second place in the Santa Fe League as visiting La Salle upset the Eagles, 1-0, Friday on the strength of a complete-game three-hitter by right-hander Scott Hunter.

“I guess you could call it an upset,” Chaminade Coach Steve Costley said. “It upset me.”

Chaminade starter Ken Meyer walked leadoff batter Matt O’Brien in the first inning and O’Brien later scored on a groundout for the only run.

Hunter struck out two and pitched out of a jam in the third. With one out and runners on second and third, Hunter struck out Pete Miller and induced Meyer to pop out on a 3-0 pitch.

Meyer (2-1) struck out five and walked one. Chaminade (12-5-1, 6-1-1 in league play), which played to an eight-inning scoreless tie against St. Genevieve on Tuesday, has not scored in more than 14 innings. The loss dropped the Eagles a half-game behind St. Genevieve.

Saugus 3, Burroughs (R) 1--Junior right-hander Roger Salkeld hurled a one-hitter and struck out 17 as the Centurions won a Golden League game at Burroughs. It was Salkeld’s second one-hitter of the season and the second time he has struck out 17. Salkeld (6-2) walked five and yielded a double in the fourth. Burroughs (2-18, 0-9) scored an unearned run in the third to take a 1-0 lead.

Saugus (13-6, 7-2) scored a single run in the fourth when Tom Dodson raced home on a wild pitch. Jared Snyder singled to score Dodson in the seventh and Matt Tull scored in the seventh on the front end of a double steal.

Hart 6, Alhambra 1--Hart remained undefeated with its 19th consecutive win in a Foothill League game at Alhambra.

Casey Burrill (2 for 3) and Lance Migita (2 for 4, one run batted in) led the Indians (19-0, 9-0), who are ranked No. 1 in The Times’ Valley poll. Chris Vasquez was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Hart had 11 hits.

Junior right-hander Jason Edwards (8-0) had a four-hitter entering the seventh before Alhambra (6-3 in league play) scored its only run.

Hart scored four runs in the first. Migita and Darin Tsukashima both singled and Davis doubled to score a run. Burrill drew a one-out walk to load the bases and Edwards followed with a run-scoring single. Vasquez drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

Ray Gardocki scored in the third for Hart on a single by Vasquez. The Indians’ final run came in the sixth when Joe DeSchryver walked and Migita drove him in with a single.

Simi Valley 12, Camarillo 1--Senior Scott Sharts improved to 6-0 with a five-inning, five-strikeout performance at Camarillo.

Simi Valley (16-5, 6-1), which remained in first place in the Marmonte League, battered four pitchers for 10 hits and took a 9-0 lead after four innings.

Terry Hill was 2 for 4 with five RBIs, including a three-run home run. Marcus Lockwood added a two-run home run. Darren Aurand was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and Sharts, who walked three times, was 2 for 2 with three runs scored.

Camarillo (8-12-1, 2-5) managed only four singles. Starter Steve Biggs (5-3), who was chased in the fourth inning, walked four and surrendered six hits and nine runs.

Newbury Park 6, Westlake 2--Senior Dan Smith was 3 for 4 with a three-run home run in a Marmonte League win at Newbury Park.

Senior right-hander Jeff Berman (4-5) pitched a complete-game five-hitter and recorded six strikeouts.

Alemany 6, Loyola 1--Greg Biley, Ray Cano and Mark Scott all hit home runs to spark the Indians’ 10-hit attack in a Del Rey League victory over visiting Loyola.

Biley’s solo home run in the third gave Alemany (13-6, 4-2) a 1-0 lead. Cano hit a solo shot later in the inning.

Scott followed with a three-run home run in the fourth and Biley added a single that scored Sal Piscitelli in the sixth.

Biley was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Scott was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Tom Petersen gave Loyola its only run with a solo home run off winning pitcher Charlie Winner (4-1) in the seventh. Winner, a senior, pitched his second complete game of the season, striking out seven and walking four.

St. Genevieve 7, Harvard 4--Junior Javier Garcia was 2 for 2 with a three-run home run and four RBIs to lead St. Genevieve to a Santa Fe League win at Harvard.

Joe Chapparro also was 3 for 4 with one RBI for St. Genevieve (12-2-1, 6-0-1).

Senior right-hander Mike Rohrbough (6-1) gave up 10 hits and struck out two in 4 innings to earn the win.

Pater Noster 6, Bell-Jeff 3--Sophomore left-hander Jose Martinez tossed a four-hitter and struck out 11 to lead Pater Noster to a Santa Fe League win at Bell-Jeff.

Martinez (2-0) also was 3 for 4 with one RBI for Pater Noster (2-5-1 in league play), which scored four runs in the third on five hits and a walk.

Bell-Jeff (6-8-1, 4-4) scored two runs on an error, a walk and a single by Mike Thompson in the seventh.

San Gabriel 12, Burroughs 1--Danny Ricabal pitched a three-hitter to lead last-place San Gabriel to a Foothill League upset at Burroughs.

San Gabriel (2-7 in league play) battered three Burroughs pitchers for 12 hits and tagged starter Chris Westbury with his fourth loss to go with four wins.

Trailing, 12-0, in the sixth, Burroughs (9-7, 5-4) scored its only run on a solo home run by E. J. Pape.

Santa Clara 13, Agoura 0--Mike Teron was 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead an 11-hit attack in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

Rio Mesa 7, Dos Pueblos 6--Steve Soliz hit two solo home runs to help the Spartans to a Channel League victory at Dos Pueblos.

Soliz homered in the fourth that brought Rio Mesa to within 5-2 after Dos Pueblos had scored five runs in the first.

Rio Mesa (12-5-1, 5-1-1) scored four runs in the sixth on four hits and a walk.

Highland Hall 38, Clearview 1--The Hawks (10-5, 4-0) had 24 hits and capitalized on 18 walks to win a Westside League contest. Jakob Jensen pitched a one-hitter and had eight strikeouts in the five-inning game that was halted because of a mercy rule.

Simi Lutheran 7, L.A. Lutheran 5--Bill Mueller struck out nine and scattered eight hits in a nonleague game at game at Hansen Dam Recreation Center.

Steve Slyn’s two-run single gave Simi Lutheran (8-1) a 6-1 lead in the sixth inning.

Grace Community 8, West Valley Christian 1--Tony Saccaro was 3 for 4 and had three RBIs and also struck out 12 in going the distance in a Westside League game at Hubert Humphrey Recreation Center.
