Racing at Santa Anita : Galunpe and Caballo de Oro Score Stakes Race Victories

Galunpe rallied from last place to beat favored Pen Bal Lady by 3 1/2 lengths in the $153,950 Santa Anita Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Saturday.

Caballo de Oro took the other stakes race on the card, the $80,450 San Simeon Handicap.

Galunpe, ridden by Fernando Toro, entered the stretch third, behind Davie’s Lamb and Pen Bal Lady, then took command in midstretch. Pen Bal Lady, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye and sent off at 6-5 by the crowd of 32,347, beat Davie’s Lamb by a half-length for second.

The time for the mile on the turf was 1:36 2/5. The victory was worth $86,450 for owners Robert Frankel and Jerome Moss. Galunpe paid $5.60, $3 and $2.20.

In the San Simeon, Caballo de Oro led all the way and held off Gallant Sailor to win by 1 lengths.

Ridden by Rafael Meza, Caballo de Oro was timed in 1:15 2/5 for the 6 1/2-furlong race, which was moved from the turf to the main track. The victory was worth $46,700, and Caballo de Oro, second choice in the betting, paid $6.60, $3.60 and $2.40.

Gallant Sailor, with Bill Shoemaker, was a half-length ahead of favored Sylvan Express.
