Prep Roundup : Fountain Valley’s Swimmers Victorious

The Fountain Valley High School girls’ swimming team defeated Marina, 87-84, Tuesday by winning the final event--the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The win, at Fountain Valley, puts the Barons in sole possession of first place in the Sunset League, with a 4-0 record. Marina is 3-1 in league competition.

Debbie Babashoff won the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute 59 seconds) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.27) for Fountain Valley.

In other Sunset League girls’ swimming:

Edison 116, Huntington Beach 50--Edison’s Colleen Cassidy won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:14.40 and also placed first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.40 at Edison.

In Sunset League boys’ swimming:

Fountain Valley 93, Marina 79--Mark Nielsen won the 50-yard freestyle (22.13) and the 100-yard freestyle for Fountain Valley (7-2, 3-1).

In Angelus League tennis:

Servite 17, St. Paul 1--Servite improved it’s record to 11-1 overall and 9-0 in league play at the Anaheim Tennis Center.

In Pacific Coast league tennis:

Laguna Beach 17, Laguna Hills 1--John Leach (48-0) swept his three sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Laguna Beach (11-5, 5-1) at Laguna Hills.

In Century League tennis:

Canyon 16, El Modena 2--Ilkyung Choi swept his three sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for Canyon (15-0, 5-0) at El Modena.

In Orange League boys’ track and field:

Valencia 106, Brea-Olinda 39--Mike Daniels won the 330-yard hurdles, the 100-yard hurdles and the 100 and was also a part of the winning mile relay team for Valencia (3-1) at Sonora. Brent Jones won the 800 (1:59.1) for Brea-Olinda (0-4).

In Orange League girls’ track and field:

Valencia 67 1/2, Brea-Olinda 58 1/2--Heather Killeen finished second in the mile (5:40) and two-mile (11:52) for Valencia (4-0) at Sonora. Brea’s Teresa Chunovich won the two-mile (11:48), 800 (2:44) and mile (5:38).
