High School Baseball : Hart Survives Scare for 20th Win

It wasn’t easy, but the result was a familiar one for Hart High.

The Indians, The Times’ No. 1 ranked team in the Valley area, managed to put away Foothill League cellar-dweller Burbank, 8-4, Tuesday to improve their record to 20-0, 10-0 in league play.

Hart had to escape a sixth-inning rally that saw the Bulldogs (4-10, 0-10) close a 5-2 deficit to 5-4. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the inning, Jason Edwards, Hart’s ace right-hander, came on in relief of starter Robby Davis to coax a strikeout and a groundout from consecutive Burbank batters, ending the inning.

Burroughs 7, Alhambra 1--Tony Jordan went 3 for 4 and had two runs batted in to lead Burroughs in a key Foothill League game at Alhambra. The win moves Burroughs (10-8, 6-4) into a second-place tie with Alhambra.

E. J. Pape went 3 for 4 for Burroughs and John Barnfather and Mario Joy each drove in two runs. Brian Forth (4-2) was the winning pitcher. He didn’t walk a batter or allow an earned run.

Quartz Hill 3, Canyon 2--Quartz Hill scored the winning run on Sean Nichols’ wild pitch in the fifth inning of the Golden League game at Canyon.

With Quartz Hill leading, 2-0, in the fourth, Dave Tyson singled in a run for Canyon (4-11, 3-7). Nichols (2-3) gave up six hits in going the distance.

Oak Park 10, Carpinteria 7--T. J. Humphreys knocked a two-run double to lead a three-run Oak Park rally in the third and added a home run in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.

With the score tied, 3-3, Humphreys doubled and picked up two of his four RBIs. John Daley led a three-run Oak Park rally with a two-run home run in the first.

Scott Ziegler (5-2) gave up 14 hits in going the distance for Oak Park (6-4-2, 4-2).

St. Genevieve 8, La Salle 0--Roland De La Maza, who has not given up an earned run in 35 innings, threw a three-hitter to lead St. Genevieve (13-2-1, 7-0-1) to a Santa Fe League win at La Salle.

De La Maza, who has 80 strikeouts in 47 innings, went the distance and struck out six.

Oakwood 11, Windward 5--Marc Williams went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and allowed no earned runs in six innings of pitching to lead Oakwood to a Liberty League win. Williams (5-1) struck out eight and walked one. All five runs scored against him were unearned.

Rio Mesa 8, Buena 1--Senior Robert Ayala raised his record to 8-1 in the Channel League game at Rio Mesa. Ayala, a senior right-hander, allowed five hits, struck out two, walked one and did not allow a run in five innings.

Agoura 5, Calabasas 1--Jeff Ritter of Agoura allowed two hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in the Frontier League game at Agoura.

Ritter, a senior right-hander, allowed both hits in the first inning, when Calabasas took a 1-0 lead.

Highland Hall 7, Grace Community 3--Craig Ernst went 2 for 3 and had two doubles and two RBIs to lead Highland Hall to a pivotal Westside League win.

The win enabled the Hawks (12-5, 5-0) to take sole possession of first place. Previously, Highland Hall was locked in a tie with Grace Community (9-6, 3-1).

Harvard 10, Bell-Jeff 1--Marty Holly hit a three-run home run to ignite an eight-run Harvard rally in the third inning of the Santa Fe League game at Harvard.

Buck Robinson, who went 2 for 2 with a double, extended the rally with a two-run single in the third. Oscar Rodriguez went 2 for 3 and scored two runs and Jay Borenstein knocked in three runs.

Montclair Prep 20, L.A. Baptist 0--Keyaan Cook and Andy Shaw both knocked in four runs and Chris Anderson tossed a four-hitter in the Alpha League game at L. A. Baptist.

Pat Huston and Cook went 4 for 6 as the Mounties racked up 23 hits.

Chaminade 9, Salesian 4--Mike LeCocq tripled home two runs in the first and J. D. Choy went 3 for 4 to lead Chaminade in the Santa Fe League game at Salesian.

Dave Morrison was 2 for 4 with a triple for Chaminade (13-5-1, 7-1-1).

Village Christian 2, Maranatha 1--Kevin Ebenoch walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to score Russell Henzie with the winning run in an Alpha League game at Maranatha.

Chris Dyck (5-2) and Craig Hudspeth combined on a one-hitter for Village Christian (8-5-1, 3-2-1).
