Girls’ Track Championships to Resume at Rancho Santiago

The Orange County Girls’ Track and Field Championships, which were rained out on their original scheduled date last Saturday, will continue today at 11 a.m. at Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana.

The meet, which originally received entries from all but five of the county schools that have girls’ programs, may be affected by the fact that league championships are next week.

Some county coaches said they will hold several of their top athletes out of today’s meet so they will be better rested for the league championships. But meet director Al Britt says the changes are not at all drastic.

“There will be some changes, but most meets are that way,” said Britt, who is head coach at Esperanza. “All the best teams, like Canyon and Mission Viejo, are still coming.”

Britt added that Rancho Santiago was his first choice as a site all along.

The meet, scheduled for UC Irvine last Saturday, was called off after the completion of only two events: the discus and the long jump. Canyon’s Allison Franke won both events and a preliminary 110-meter hurdle heat, the only running event not postponed.

Rancho Santiago features a new all-weather track that has been used only once in competition, on Friday for the college’s conference championships.
